Mission & Interests

Goals: WSM (vzw Wereldsolidariteit – Solidarité Mondiale asbl) strengthens social movements worldwide so they can transform their society into a sustainable and inclusive society. WSM and its network are working for inclusive and sustainable development. What does this imply? - Development must be understood in its broader sense of building societies. It is clear that in the process of building societies, several possible paths can be followed. Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: We have been actively following and contributing to the European Communication on Decent Work (2006/2010), on Social Protection in EU Development Cooperation (2012) and the role of Civil society in Development Cooperation (2012). We also closely follow up the contribution of the EU institutions to the implementation of the Agenda 2030, mainly from our thematic expertise: decent work and the right to social protection. Recently, WSM has taken a very active interest in the issue of human rights due diligence and how to bring this within EU initiatives, policies and legisaltive files. As a result, WSM has contributed to the deliberations and negotiations of the EU Directive on Non-Financial Reporting (2014/95/EU) and the Conflict Minerals Regulation (2016). WSM is participating in the advocacy work along with european's NGO's and trade Union networks on a directive for a mandatory Human Right Due Diligence for Companies (2022). In the European Parliament, we have actively worked together with MEP's on human rights resolutions condemning labour rights violations in several countries worldwide. We have also contributed to the drafting of Parliamentary Reports and questions of MEP's for EC Commissioners on issues relevant to our work in the field of labour rights and social protection. in 2017, WSM contributed to the EP Report on the impact of international trade and the EU’s trade policies on global value chains.
Communication Activities: We will follow up as to how the above mentioned policies and initiatives are going to be implemented. In terms of funding instruments, we also monitor if concrete opportunities arise under the 2014–2020 programme on Civil Society Organisations and Local Authorities, the Global Public Goods and Challenges Thematic Programme as well as the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights. Between December 2018 and August 2019, WSM was closely involved in the drafting of a new Global Action on 'Improving Synergies between Social Protection and Public Finance Management', which was formally approved by the EC at the end of August 2019. the Global Action is funded by the EC, and will be implemented by the ILO, UNICEF and the Global Coalition for Social Protection Floors (GCSPF). WSM was involved in this process on behalf of the GCSPF. WSM has been involved, with a large range of other european's NGO's and trade unions in the public campaign claiming for the approbation of a directive on mandatory human rights due diligence for companies (2022).
