Mission & Interests

Goals: World Cancer Research Fund International is a charity dedicated to examining how diet, weight and physical activity affect the risk of developing and surviving cancer. We are experts in cancer prevention and our vision is of a world where no-one develops a preventable cancer. We commission and fund research from leading institutions around the world into the effects of diet, nutrition, body fatness and physical activity on cancer risk and cancer survival and outcomes. This research aims to fill the current gaps in scientific knowledge. We promote our evidence based Cancer Prevention Recommendations and develop practical help, advice and tips on how people can reduce their risk of developing cancer. We use our research and evidence to influence public health policy at the highest level and are trusted advisors to governments and other official bodies from around the world, including the World Health Organization.

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: Policies related to cancer, prevention of non-communicable diseases, obesity/overweight, diet, nutrition, food systems and physical activity.
Communication Activities: WCRFI was part of an Horizon 2020 funded project called CO-CREATE on preventing adolescent obesity through nutrition and physical activity policy actions. We undertook events, published peer reviewed and other papers on this project, developed policy outputs including a policy index and policy briefs. We also undertook communication activities to promote and disseminate CO-CREATE outputs through channels including our e-newsletter, conference presentations and social media posts. We also used the EU Health Policy Portal to promote CO-CREATE events and outputs. The CO-CREATE formally ended in May 2023, but we are still promoting the outputs. WCRFI has been part of an informal coalition of health sector NGOs seeking action on harmful food marketing to children at EU level. The coalition remains in existence, but has not been very active in 2023 (no external activities).
