Mission & Interests

Goals: Women’s Aid is a national, feminist organisation working to prevent and address the impact of domestic violence and abuse. We do this by advocating, influencing, training, and campaigning for effective responses to reduce the scale and impacts of domestic abuse on women and children and providing high quality, specialised, integrated, support services. Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: Areas of focus at EU level are on gender equality, specifically on the prevention of DSGBV. We mainly work at national level, however where relevant will feed into reviews on policies at EU level and wider. For instance, pieces that fall under the Istanbul Convention. Another area of interest would be the Gender Equality Strategy and the EU Directive on GBV. In May 2023, in collaboration with the WAVE network we joined the signing of the letter to MEP Frances Fitzgerald to advocate for Inclusion of Women Specialist Services in the proposal for an EU Directive on Violence Against Women. In 2023, we signed an open letter to the Hague Special Commission, ahead of the Eighth Special Session to Review Operation of the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction (‘the Hague Abduction Convention’) which is available here: https://www.hague-mothers.org.uk. In 2023, our policy consultant attended "Domestic Violence & Custody Rights: The protection of women and children from violence in light of the new EC proposal for a Directive" on behalf of Women's Aid, this online event took place on Tuesday 24th of January 2023, at 16.30, at the European Parliament, hosted by EMP Elena Kountoura. In 2022, Women's Aid inputted on Draft Strategy of the Council of Europe Gender Equality Strategy 2024-2029 through WAVE. WAVE has observatory status at the Council of Europe. Women's Aid participated in a consultation with MEP Frances Fitzgerald on the EU's new proposal for a Directive on combating violence against women and domestic violence in Europe House on October 14th 2022. We also submitted input on the draft report. The finalised draft report on behalf of the FEMM Committee was submitted in December. Sarah Benson, Women's Aid CEO made a presentation to the European Parliament COVID Committee meeting on 29 November 2022.
Communication Activities: In May 2023, Women's Aid emailed co-signed letter to MEP Frances Fitzgerald. Women’s Aid leads the way in raising awareness and providing information on domestic violence and abuse to victims and survivors, their families and friends, their communities and wider society. Our annual public awareness campaigns and communications activities are a vital way to highlight the prevalence, nature and impact of domestic violence and abuse, intimate relationship abuse and femicide. Women’s Aid provides solution-based recommendations on improving preventions, legal responses, policies and protections to support women and children subjected to domestic violence and abuse, and we bring their concerns to a number of national and local fora. We make submissions and meet with government ministers, policymakers and members of the Oireachtas to discuss a range of issues and collaborate with other agencies and organisations to bring about social and political change. Femicide Watch: Women's Aid keeps a watching brief on Femicide in Ireland and keeps the data up to date and shares this data publicly. EIGE has referenced Women's Aid data on this.
