Mission & Interests

Goals: WECF is a nonprofit network dedicated to a gender just and healthy planet for all. Our international network consists of 100+ ecofeminist network members and over 150 strategic network partners covering 70 countries. We believe that a sustainable future and environment needs holistic solutions reflecting the lives of people on the ground. We see that feminist action is needed in three key areas: - Feminist Sustainable Development, - Feminist Climate and Energy solutions and - Feminist Toxic Free Environment. In these three areas, we have three types of intervention strategies: 1. Capacity strengthening & intersectional analysis, 2. Policy advocacy & inclusive decision-making and 3. Movement building & joint transformation The work in these three key areas will lead to improved or new policies, laws, norms, and practices to strengthen gender equality and women’s rights in 70 countries.

Communication Activities: WECF is a founding member of the Women’s Major Group. The WMG is a self-organised network of 1000 organisations from over 100 countries providing input into the global policy processes on Sustainable Development. WECF gave substantial input in the monthly negotiations of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and does since then at the HLPF overseeing its implementation. WECF supports grassroots women leaders to participate in the policy process and speak in the United Nations halls. We help develop policy interventions and to organise meetings with government delegations. Through our Women2030 program, we support local women organizations in 70 countries to engage in the national implementation of the global commitments for Sustainable Development including the global goal on Gender Equality. WECF is also an active core member of the Women and Gender Constituency (WGC). WECF contributes to the climate negotiations and ensures the participation of grassroots women organisations from our networks in the policy meetings (‘gender-just climate solutions’ program in cooperation with the WGC) The list of the processes we follow: - Aarhus Convention - Agenda 2030 (Sustainable Development Goals) - Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm (BRS) Conventions - Generation Equality Forum and Beijing plus 25 -UN Women’s Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) - WHO’s European Environment and Health Process (EHP) - United Nation’s Environmental Assembly (UNEA) - United Nation’s Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). In 2016, WECF signed a Framework Partnership Agreement with DEVCO, for the implementation of the programme Women2030. The #Women2030 programme is being implemented in 52 countries across different regions of the world. The EU DEVCO funding for Women2030 programme will ended in 2021. Activities will continue with funding from Netherlands as part of their Power of Voices and Power of Women strategic partnerships. WECF is also part of the coalition of 28 civil society organisations led by the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) in the project Make Europe Sustainable for All (MESA), under the EU DEAR funding program. We work in wider coalitions with over 150 civil society organisations as part of SDG-Watch Europe. Since August 2020 WECF is part of a new coalition working on awareness raising on gender, climate and development, funded under the EU DEAR programme. The action will take place in 13 EU Member States and combines organisations with diverse experiences. This project will use the combined experience to raise awareness, build capacity and support EU citizens, particularly young people, to build public support for ambitious climate change and development policies which have gender equality at their heart. EuropeAid NEAR Georgia Women's Power and Participation (WPP) was launched in 2021. It is aimed at empowering women, youth, and minority groups. WECF started 2 new Horzion 2020 projects as part of big consortiums in February 2022 (REAL DEAL and Shared Green Deal).
