Mission & Interests

Goals: VSO is a development agency that works through volunteers. We are a global leader in volunteering for development, bringing together youth, community and international volunteers to contribute their skills alongside each other in programmes which have a long-term and sustainable impact on poverty across the countries we work in. Our vision is a fair world for everyone. Our mission: Creating lasting change through volunteering. We bring about change not by sending aid, but by working with volunteers and partners to empower people living in some of the world’s poorest and fragile regions. Our ambition remains is to make a significant contribution towards achieving the SDGs using the transformational power of volunteering. We run programmes in health, education and livelihoods in 24 countries across Africa and Asia, all of which embed our core approaches of resilience, social accountability and inclusion (especially women, youth, people with disabilities).

Main EU Legislative Proposals: VSO currently actively monitors the following EU initiatives, policies and legislative files: • The EU’s international cooperation policy, in particular policies related to human development including health and education (NDICI) • Humanitarian Assistance (ECHO) • The EU Solidarity Corps Initiative • The implementation of the EU’s international cooperation budget • The EU’s policy on private sector involvement in international cooperation • Relevant policy implementation, public relations and communication activities such as projects, events and publications
Communication Activities: VSO is producing communication products related to the following EU funded projects:. • Nepal: Sahayatra: Strengthening Civil Society for Resilient and Inclusive Education Governance in Nepal – EUR 730.000. January 2021 – July 2024. • Thailand: “VOY” (outcry in Thai) – Voice of Youth – EUR 749.379. January 2020 - December 2022. • Tanzania: Collective Action for Rights realization in the extractives Industry in Tanzania (CLARITY) – EUR 1.385.966. January 2021 – January 2024. • Co-applicant in two EU projects in Cambodia: RECOVER (lead application Danish Church Aid) and GREEN (lead applicant Save the Children) – January 2021 – January 2024.

Info Members: VSO has one Funding & Partnership Lead working full time on EU related matters based in the VSO Netherlands office. In addition, VSO has programme managers in-country that work on implementation of our 5 EU-funded programmes. Furthermore, there are 4 regional business pursuit leads who work on our partnership with EU delegations. VSO NL has 1 political advisor who supports with our lobby work vis-à-vis the EU.

VSO operates programmes out of 24 country offices in Africa and Asia. VSO is a company limited by guarantee, registered in England and Wales, with company number 703509. VSO is governed by an International Board and an Executive Board. International Board VSOs governing body is the International Board, currently comprising 12 trustees. The International Board (IB) meets three times a year in person and four times a year via telephone. Trustees are appointed for an initial period of three years, which can be extended for a further three-year period. Executive Board The International Board delegates VSO’s day-to-day management to the chief executive and the Executive Board. The Executive Board holds responsibility for quarterly review and revision of objectives, budgets and strategic direction of VSO. The Executive Board has operational oversight of VSOs global work. Each member is responsible for an area of VSOs global operations, including: programmes, business development, people and organisational development, and finance and strategic partnerships. The Executive Board meets weekly to oversee implementation of strategic and operational activity, allocate resources, set and monitor standards, and determine core approaches to how VSO works. The Executive Board formally reviews achievements against VSO’s development, operational and financial objectives quarterly, in collaboration with senior employees across the organisation. There is a formal list of matters reserved for the International Board in VSO’s Schedule of Delegation. The Board is responsible for approving and monitoring implementation of VSOs long-term strategy, annual corporate business plan, objectives and budget, key policies, constitutional changes and the appointment of the chief executive.
