Communication Activities: For an overview of our activities and programmes in health, data, healthy cities and air pollution see: https://www.vitalstrategies.org/programs/
Highlights include:
• Data for Health: Vital Strategies partners with governments worldwide to not only improve the way they access data, but also to expand the use of data to enhance public health policymaking—presenting government partners with the opportunity to allocate resources and design policies and programmes that will have the most impact on people’s health. Vital Strategies currently has 4 data and health programmes: civil registration, data impact, cancer registries and global grants.
• Partnership for Healthy Cities: This programme, supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies in partnership with WHO and Vital Strategies, is a global network of 70 cities whose mayors have committed to prevent NCDs—including cancer, diabetes, heart disease and chronic lung disease—and injuries through proven interventions. As implementing partner in the initiative, Vital Strategies provides in-kind technical assistance, supports communication and public relations efforts and disburses grants to participating cities.
• Air pollution and health: Vital Strategies provides technical expertise and consultative services to inform policies and influence public discourse around air pollution and its health impacts around the world. We partner with governments to influence policies and our expert staff and consultants are building comprehensive and innovative guides for city governments around the world looking to jumpstart their air quality management systems, focusing on air quality monitoring systems, policy solutions, and public engagement strategies. Part of our work also includes training journalists to find and use data on the sources and health impacts of air pollution.
• Tobacco control: As a partner in the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use, Vital Strategies supports the adoption of lifesaving policies that reach hundreds of millions of people around the world. Since 2007, we have worked with 41 countries to deliver evidence-based population-level campaigns and build local capacity to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco. Our campaigns encourage quitting, delay initiation and support policy goals, such as smoke-free environments and tobacco tax increases. To date, our campaigns have been seen by more than 2 billion people. Working in partnership with the American Cancer Society, Vital Strategies has produced five editions of The Tobacco Atlas, the leading resource for policymakers, journalists and advocates to understand the global tobacco epidemic and proven solutions.
• Food policy: Vital Strategies works closely with partners in Barbados, Brazil, Colombia, Jamaica and South Africa to help them deliver strategic communication campaigns that drive public support for high-impact policies aimed at creating a healthier food environment.
• Road safety: Vital Strategies is an implementing partner of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS), a consortium carrying out proven road safety interventions in 15 countries and up to 30 cities around the world. The initiative’s comprehensive, evidence-based approach includes: strengthening legislation; improving key risky road behaviours with a focus on speeding; promoting infrastructure improvements and sustainable urban transportation; and advocating for improved vehicle safety standards. Vital Strategies uses its expertise to strengthen road crash surveillance systems, and then uses outcome data to inform policy and action. We also guide the creation of strategic communication and mass media campaigns to change road user behaviour.
