Mission & Interests

Goals: The Uyghur Human Rights Project (UHRP) promotes the rights of the Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslim peoples in East Turkistan, referred to by the Chinese government as the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, through research-based advocacy. UHRP was founded in 2004 as a project of the Uyghur American Association and became an independent nonprofit organization in 2016. We publish reports and analysis, in English and Chinese, to defend Uyghurs’ civil, political, social, cultural, and economic rights according to international human rights standards. We also submit reports and policy recommendations to governments and multilateral bodies like the UN and EU.

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: The Uyghur Human Rights Project focuses on legislation and policies that affect forced labour and Uyghur forced labour in international supply chain. UHRP seeks comprehensive actions to address this crisis and works with other Uyghur rights organizations, labour rights organizations and advocacy groups to achieve this. The legislation that is of interest to UHRP's activities and advocacy goals are: Proposal for a DIRECTIVE OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL on Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence and amending Directive (EU) 2019/1937 Proposal for a ban on goods made using forced labour UHRP has identified these proposals as critical for ending the use of Uyghur forced labour in international supply chains.
Communication Activities: UHRP works with partner organizations and the coalition to End Uyghur Forced Labour to hold events that highlight the importance of legislation preventing import of goods made with Uyghur forced labour, and to encourage the EU to implement policy to ensure that supply chains of businesses in the EU do not use Uyghur forced labour. UHRP also meets with Members of European Parliament to inform them on the issues regarding Uyghur forced labour and the broader implications of state-imposed forced labour in international supply chains and advocates for support of passing critical legislation that would curb Uyghur forced labour goods entering the EU, and ensure corporate supply chains remain free of Uyghur forced labour.
