Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: U.Porto currently follows a myriad of EU policies and initiatives in diverse domains such as agriculture, environment, energy, culture and media, education, justice, health & public health, social affairs, transport, science and technology, and mobility. The combination of structural funds (including territorial cooperation programmes - INTERREG) with national subsidies enables U.Porto to pursue and develop high-end and impactful activities and projects at a local, national and international level. Specifically at a European level, U.Porto shows a significant track record and participation in R&D+i projects funded directly by the European Commission as well as mobility and lifelong programmes (Erasmus+, Erasmus Mundus, and others). Since 2008, U.Porto’s participation in EU projects and initiatives has increased and widened, covering different 1) R&D+i programmes like FPs FP7, H2020 and Horizon Europe, 2) education, mobility and lifelong training programmes, like Erasmus+, and 3) other programmes like Justice, Rights, Equality and Citizenship, Third Health, former Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI), Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), Internal Security Fund – Police, Union Civil Protection Mechanism, and the European Institute of Innovation & Technology KICs, in a total over 240 ongoing projects (data march 2024).
Communication Activities: U.Porto's R&D+i ecosystem comprises a diverse set of research, development and innovation structures, in which a multifaceted scientific community works daily to achieve the highest standards of excellence. The research ecosystem includes 14 Organic Units (Faculties) and 11 Associated Research Institutes – altogether they host the 48 R&D Units evaluated and funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). In the last evaluation exercise, 90% of them have been classified as “Excellent” or “Very Good”. Many of these research units act as interfaces for institutions, bringing the University together, as a main partner, along with other organisations representing external interests. U.Porto participates in 17 Associate Laboratories (LAs), 22 Collaborative Laboratories (CoLABs) and currently integrates 24 Research Infrastructures of the National Roadmap for Research Infrastructures. U.Porto ecosystem also mobilizes several functional and thematic competence centres as well as two Ciência Viva Centres that are part of the national scientific outreach network, Ciência Viva. Continuously committed to supporting and encouraging scientific and technological development, and the production of results, this broad ecosystem of R&D+I encourages a multidisciplinary and multifaceted approach, where the various actors in the ecosystem collaborate and cooperate in a joint strategy with the aim of ensuring a research, development and innovation activity that responds to societal challenges, within different areas of activity and in national and international contexts. U.Porto has a significative activity of scientific dissemination and other communication activities, resulting from the scientific activity carried out in the broad ecosystem of R&D+I of U.Porto, in the ongoing research projects, as well as in other cooperation initiatives and networks. According to the Web of Science, between 2017-2021, the U.Porto published a total of 22208 scientific publications (only citable documents), 58% in international collaboration. Since 2020, U.Porto is a member of the European University Alliance for Global Health (EUGLOH), which is a strategic partnership between the Université Paris-Saclay (UPSaclay), Lund University (LU), Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU), Universidade do Porto (UPorto) and the University of Szeged (USZ) in the context of the European Commission’s European Universities Initiative. Within the EUGLOH network, a balanced interfaculty consortium of researchers and students will develop interdisciplinary activities, particularly in education and training related to Global Health. Combining expertise and scientific infrastructure in fields such as biomedicine, the life sciences and social sciences, our inter-campus project will tackle a variety of challenges related to well-being and public health. With the approval of the EUGLOH 2.0 project, the Alliance has recently been expanded to 4 new members: University of Alcalá (UAH), The Arctic University of Norway (UiT), University of Novi Sad (UNS) and Universität Hamburg (UHH). U.Porto is very active in science communication and outreach. For example, U.Porto "Mostra" - science showcase week - register over 30 000 visitors every year, making the university closer to society and integrating it in the university's daily activities. U.Porto uses different resources and tools for communication and outreach activities that include social networks (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter e YouTube), mailing lists for researchers, professors and students of U.Porto, mailing lists for companies and associations of industries, newsletters released by U.Porto, websites, magazines, etc.
