Mission & Interests

Goals: United Nations Watch is a Swiss non-governmental organization, established under Art. 30 of the Swiss Civil Code, whose mandate is to monitor the performance of the United Nations by the yardstick of its own Charter. Based in Geneva, United Nations Watch was established in 1993 by legendary civil rights activist Morris B. Abram, the former U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva. United Nations Watch participates actively at the UN as an accredited NGO in Special Consultative Status to the United Nations Economic and Social Council. United Nations Watch believes in the United Nations’ mission on behalf of the international community to “save succeeding generations from the scourge of war” and provide for a more just world. We believe that even with its shortcomings, the UN remains an indispensable tool in bringing together diverse nations and cultures. United Nations Watch is foremost concerned with the just application of UN Charter principles.

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: Our director Hillel Neuer was invited, on behalf of the AFET External Financing Working Group (EFI) Chairman David Lega (MEP), to a working group meeting on Tuesday 19 March 10.00-11.30 on the allegations brought against UNRWA staff. The meeting is a follow-up to the joint AFET-DEVE committee meeting of 13 February addressing the recent allegations against UNRWA staff. At that meeting, some questions were answered, yet others were not. EFI will thus hold a follow up discussion on the matter, especially addressing questions around the agency’s impartiality and reputation, as well as possible repercussions from the current investigations. Moreover, the ramifications of suspending UNRWA funding requires further discussion, in order to ensure the delivery of humanitarian assistance to innocent civilians in Gaza.
Communication Activities: In January 2024, United Nations Watch published a report entitled “Terrorgram” concerning support for terrorism among UNRWA staff. This is available on our website, www.unwatch.org.
Inter-institutional or Unofficial Groupings: Freedom of religion and religious tolerance
