Mission & Interests

Goals: Improving the Turkish shipbuilding industry, helping the Turkish shipyards to take place in the world market, finding solutions for problems of shipyards through relevant authorities, associations, and organizations, representing the Turkish Shipbuilding Industry in national and international areas are among the missions of GISBIR. Turkish Shipbuilders’ Association (GISBIR) has almost one hundred members and represents vast majority of the industry. GISBIR is a member of Waterborne TP and SEA Europe also, Council Member of ASEF (Active Shipbuilding Experts’ Federation).

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: Although we do not directly make proposals on the European Union legislation, as a member of Sea Europe and Waterborne TP, the issues on which we provide comments and opinions through these institutions are written below; * Ocean Fund * Alternative Fuels * Decarbonization
Communication Activities: • Technical participation in international events, congresses: (Examples: GISBIR participated in UN COP 22 (Barcelona Convention) & COP 26 (Climate Change) meetings, IMO MSC and MEPC meetings, SEAEurope meetings, Black Sea Regional Meeting and various exhibitions) • Contribution to national/international proposed legislations, guidelines, requirements : ( Examples: Comment on Designation of suphur ECA for Mediterrenian, comment of relevant IMO proposed requirements etc.) • Participation in international EU projects Examples: GISBIR involved in 2 EU funded projects (H2020, . In 2022 GISBIR also studied for 2 new Horizon Europe Project Proposals with potential partners) • Studies of clean production techniques in shipbuilding; (Examples: Research about renewable energy use, rooftop solar energy potential, energy efficiency for welding studies are going on. Some shipyards implemented solar energy on their roofs. ) • Decarbonization studies in the shipyards region; (Examples: The Worlds First Zero Emission Tug began to operate in Tuzla Shipyard Region and 3 vessels are under construction) • Periodic measurement of air and sediment parameters in shipyard regions etc.; (Examples: Monitoring of elements (As,Cd, Pb,Zn,Cu,Co,Fe,Sn) in seawater and air quality monitoring was conducted in Tuzla Bay. Hydrological and Oceanographic Study Report of the Marine Research Project of Tuzla Shipyards Region was prepared.

Info Members: Turkish Shipbuilders’ Association (GISBIR), which is the official representative of the shipbuilding sector in Turkey, has 94 member shipyards. GISBIR as a matter of principle follows up international and national requirements for shipbuilding industry takes into account social and sustainability needs including environmental and human health issues. As an Association which represents the shipbuilding sector, we follow up the EU Green Deal developments, UN Climate Change developments, as well as we take part in projects and studies involving environmental and climate goals to achieve the carbon zero target for our activities. GISBIR members build new generation, environmentally friendly, low carbon/zero emission ships, retrofit of existing ships for ballast water treatment, SOx emission treatment etc. in compliance with the goals of IMO, EU, Regional Organizations.
