Mission & Interests

Goals: Our mission is to improve the governance and management of tropical forests for the benefit of people, biodiversity and sustainable development. Our objective is to ensure that knowledge is used effectively in the formulation of appropriate policies and managing forests for conservation and sustainable development. Our values: Our work is based on the core values of sustainability, inclusiveness, and equity. In our view, sustainable, inclusive and equitable development is an achievable goal once stakeholders, and crucially local stakeholders, participate in shaping the decisions that govern forested landscapes and value chains. TBI believes that evidence-based information, individual and organisational capacity, and multi-stakeholder dialogue are essential for progress towards sustainable landscapes and value chains. Our unique value: -A focus on smallholders, indigenous peoples, local communities and small and medium-sized entrepreneurs -A central role for knowledg (...)

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: - EUTR/ FLEGT Regulation — FLEGT Voluntary Partnership Agreements (VPAs) - 'Stepping up EU Action to Protect and Restore the World’s Forests’ / EU Regulation on halting deforestation - REDIIBIO project, in the context of REDII Guidelines - Forest Partnerships
Communication Activities: VPA/FLEGT in EU policy making Tropenbos International has run the EU project “Strengthening the capacity of non-state actors to improve FLEGT-VPA and REDD+ processes in Western Africa” (2016-2020) to increase the role of non-state actors in forest governance processes in Western Africa and the participation of NSAs in FLEGT-VPA and REDD+ processes in Ghana, Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire. [https://www.tropenbos.org/projects/strengthening+the+capacity+of+non-state+actors+to+improve+flegt-vpa+and+redd%2b+processes+in+western+africa] In the context of the EU Chainsaw Milling project (2007-2015), TBI helped to establish and facilitated the Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue (MSD), to share information, reduce conflict between stakeholders and generate jointly agreed solutions for addressing illegal chainsaw milling. This included finding sustainable alternatives to illegal chainsaw milling in the country jointly with relevant stakeholders. [https://www.tropenbos.org/projects/addressing+chainsaw+milling+in+ghana+and+guyana+through+multi-stakeholder+dialogue] Information on the chainsaw milling sector in Ghana is presented in a synthesis publication ‘Chainsaw milling in Ghana: Context, drivers and impacts by Marfo, E. (2010)’.[http://www.tropenbos.org/file.php/208/chainsaw_milling_in_ghana_marfo2010.pdf.] Details about the MSD process in Ghana can be found in the publication ‘The Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue in Ghana: Towards a negotiated solution to illegal chainsaw milling by Parker Mckeown, J. N. Rozemeijer, and M. Wit (2013)’. [http://www.tropenbos.org/file.php/1542/msdinghana-web.pdf] In 2015, the Ministry of Economic Affairs of the Netherlands organized a consultation meeting with Dutch stakeholders, during which different stakeholders shared their perspectives on successes, failures and scope for improvement of both EUTR and EU FLEGT Action plan. [https://www.tropenbos.org/news/report+available:+dutch+consultation+meeting+on+eu+flegt+action+plan+and+timber+regulation] EU action on deforestation Tropenbos International actively engages in the Dutch and EU debate on an ambitious Plan for ‘Stepping up EU Action to Protect and Restore the World’s Forests’. We provided knowledge-based input into EU consultations this and last year, such as a position paper 'Designing an effective ambitious and coherent EU regulatory framework' [December 2020; https://www.tropenbos.org/resources/publications/designing+an+effective,+ambitious+and+coherent+eu+regulatory+framework+to+tackle+deforestation], and 'Including smallholders in EU action to protect and restore the world’s forests' [September 2021; https://www.tropenbos.org/resources/publications/including+smallholders+in+eu+action+to+protect+and+restore+the+world%E2%80%99s+forests] TBI is part of the so-called smallholder NGO coalition, aiming to ensure that the realities and needs of smallholders and forest communities are taken into account, to ensure an effective implementation of the future EU requirements. See for example the following publication: https://www.tropenbos.org/resources/publications/including+smallholders+in+eu+action+to+protect+and+restore+the+world’s+forests We are particularly active in the policy debate on sustainable cocoa supply chains, both in producing countries (Ghana), as well as in the Netherlands and on EU level. In 2019, TBI and TB-G have joint hands with Fern and EcoCare in work to learn lessons from VPA FLEGT for cocoa & forest initiatives. This resulted in a joint a policy brief on ‘Transferring lessons from FLEGT-VPA to promote governance reform in Ghana’s cocoa sector’, and study ‘Towards sustainable cocoa supply chains: Regulatory options for the EU’.
