Mission & Interests

Goals: The objects of the EYBA are: to support and promulgate the maintenance and promulgation of the rule of law, the principle of democracy, the principles enshrined in the ECHR and the importance of access to justice; to work for the welfare of Young Lawyers in Europe; to educate and train Young Lawyers in Europe; to facilitate the exchange of Young Lawyers in Europe; to encourage and develop Organisations; to seek to influence policies affecting Young Lawyers at all European institutions, and in particular at the European Commission and European Parliament; to improve the working conditions and standard of living of Young Lawyers in Europe; to support Organisations who are in difficulty or request support for a particular project; to develop and promote a professional network amongst Members; to organise, and to assist Members to organise, conferences for the benefit of Members. Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: The main policies targeted by the EYBA are: Access to justice, fair trial, support to European young lawyers, education/training, judicial cooperation, harmonization of legislative framework, gender equality and fight against discrimination, protection of human rights, digitalization of justice.
Communication Activities: EYBA regularly addresses the targeted policies during its training course and takes action with respect to the protection of the rights and monitors the EU’s positions regarding Rule of Law issues in EU countries. The EYBA created in 2021 a Research Committee to monitor developments in European legislation and Jurisprudence in the targeted areas. The EYBA is involved as expert in the EU/CoE PGGII regional project “Strengthening the profession of lawyer in line with European standards” aimed at developing a concept paper and a road map on supporting the youth in the legal profession in Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine (DONORS European Union and Council of Europe). In november 2022 the EYBA has sent its feedback to the initiative "Liability rules for Artificial Intelligence – The Artificial Intelligence Liability Directive (AILD)" The EYBA has also sent its feedback to the initiative "Further macro-financial assistance to Moldova – proposal for a European Parliament/Council decision" The EYBA organizes three main events per year and the programme provides seminars, social and cultural events. CONFERENCES AND MAIN TOPICS International weekend 2022 in London. Several topics were touched, including international criminal law and the effectiveness of international sanctions. Summer conference 2022 in Strasbourg. The main topic being the role of EU institution and human rights in light of the conflict in Ukraine. Spring Conference 2022 in Glasgow: The main topic is "The Environment and the Law". This will include seminars on: How to become an "environmentally conscious lawyer",How concerns over the environment are affecting legal trends and legal practice, Upcoming legislative changes. Summer Conference 2021-virtual: Ethical aspects of work in the legal society Spring Conference 2021-virtual: Litigating Brexit, International Criminal Law–An area unaffected by Brexit?, Brexit and Immigration International weekend 2020-virtual:The future of the legal profession in light of Covid19 in different Jurisdictions, Well being for junior layers in a digital age International Weekend 2019-London: Bullying and Harassment,100 years of Women in Practice Summer conference 2019-Rome:International and internal trusts,Gig economy and Digital Labour Platforms: How to guarantee decent work, Market abuse offences and double jeopardy, Lectio magistralis of Guido Raimondi, former president of the ECHR,Food law, Fashion law Spring conference 2019-Chisinau:“Policy making, strategic planning and implementation of the goals on harmonization and approximation of the national laws with European Community Acquis”; “Contemporary challenges in Internet regulation: preserving copyright in the sharing economy”; “Wine industry and challenges of the related business development. Regional and national perspective”. Moreover, the EYBA frequently publish public statements to raise the attention on the protection of human rights, rule of law, independence of the legal profession, independence of the judiciary, right to access to a lawyer, fair trial, endangered lawyers. EYBA LAST STATEMENTS: 10 January 2020 in defence of human rights and the rule of law in Poland; 31 August 2021 regarding the situation in Afghanistan; 10 December 2021 for the human rights day; 24 January 2022 for the Day of the endangered lawyers; 25 February 2022 on the Conflict in Ukraine. The EYBA has created a list of lawyers expert in migration law, refugee law and human rights, in the European countries, that are available to give advice for the Ukrainians who are currently outwith the country seeking protection available at the following link http://eyba.org/2305-2. The EYBA is implementing an on-line Course “Ethics for Lawyers” that covers the key concepts and principles, the International and European (CoE and EU) framework as well as the relevant case law of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) and of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU).

Complementary Information: EYBA has not offices nor employees. Representatives and officers carry out their role for free and they pay their expenses when travaling and attending events for the association. The association has low membership fees both for institutional and for individual members. EYBA organises annually several events, the cost of which are borne by the national association affiliated with EYBA (institutional members) that hosts the event. Furthermore, participants are required to pay a ticket to cover the exceeding part of the costs. Annual costs are mostly related to the website, bank account fees and few other expeses that might occur. That is why the sum of estimate annual costs is so low. The next financial statement (04/2022-03/2023) will be approved during the upcoming summer annual general meeting.

Organisation Members: The European Young Bar Association have created a network of 25 Young Bars and Junior committees of Law Societies from more than 20 European countries, bringing together thousands of young lawyers. The members of this network collaborate in order to facilitate knowledge of the European countries’ legal systems, through training activities for lawyers, provide contact points useful for transnational proceedings and guarantee a widespread dissemination of the initiatives and statements of the EYBA among young lawyers across Europe. Moreover, the EYBA is member of International Bar Association and the Association signed cooperation agreements with the Hong Kong Bar Association and the Russian Young Bar Association.
