Mission & Interests

Goals: The mission of SAFE is to accelerate the real-world deployment of secure, resilient, and sustainable transportation and energy solutions of the United States, Europe and its partners, by shaping policies, perceptions, and practices that create opportunity for all. SAFE’s global initiative, the Coalition for Reimagined Mobility (ReMo) advances a vision for new mobility technologies and services to shape a future that is better for people and planet. ReMo identifies how to enable this vision via applied research and policy awareness building in the U.S. and Europe to improve transportation systems that move people and goods, making them more sustainable, more equitable, and more efficient. Another SAFE initiative, the European Initiative for Energy Security (EIES) develops innovative policy proposals, shapes clear narratives, and builds new pathways and coalitions of support centered on a comprehensive energy, economic and broader security agenda.

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: Support policies and provide comments on: Mobility as a Service directive, Multimodal Digital Mobility Services regulation, European mobility data space, Regulatory sandboxing for new mobility applications, Related emissions standards and regulations, Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Directive, Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe, Fit for 55, End of life vehicle recycling, Autonomous Vehicle liability, Vehicle classification and design standards, Infrastructure for cooperative, connected and automated mobility (CCAM), Fuel economy and emissions standards, Critical Raw Material Act, Net-Zero Industry Act, Digitalization and electrification of freight, Digital free trade agreements and Neutral freight data exchange standards. EIES also brings together policymakers, business, and former military leaders to develop and advocate for policies that prioritize Europe’s energy security and strategic autonomy to ensure secure and diverse supply chains, a resilient and clean European industrial base, and peace and prosperity. EIES seeks to bolster cooperation and collaboration across the Atlantic and between like-minded countries on these issues, to achieve shared goals in the face of global challenges.
Communication Activities: Publish issue briefs and reports, provided comments and conducted webinars with partners related to the topics above. Hosted events on the sidelines of major conferences including the Minerals Investment Network for Vital Energy Security and Transition (MINVEST) /Mineral Security Partnership (MSP) roundtable on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, and discussions at the SAFE Summit, NATO and EUROFORES.

Organisation Members: SAFE brings together prominent military and business leaders to develop and advocate for policies that improve energy security by significantly curtailing our dependence on oil and promoting the responsible use of our domestic energy resources. SAFE relies on the knowledge and experience of retired military officers, Fortune 500 CEOs, and its expert staff to produce high-quality, fact based analysis and policy recommendations for lawmakers, regulatory agencies, and the public. In addition, SAFE and/or its initiatives convene the Energy Security Leadership Council, Coalition for Responsible Mineral Competitiveness and the Electrification Coalition Business Council.
