Mission & Interests

Goals: The SAMARITAN INTERNATIONAL (SAM.I.) network was founded on 11 August 1994. Today, SAM.I. consists of 20 member organisations working in social services, rescue services, first-aid training, civil protection and humanitarian aid. Over three million individual members, 150,000 volunteers and 45,000 full-time employees in 19 countries form the basis of the SAM.I. network. SAM.I. serves to coordinate the activities among its members, to develop new cross-border partnerships and to represent the interests of its members towards the European Union. In particular with regard to questions of emergency care the member organisations also practically support the development to a united Europe.

Main EU Legislative Proposals: Implementation of the European Pillar of Social Rights including: the European Care Strategy (Council recommendation 2022/0264(NLE)) Revision of the Directive 2006/126/EC on driving licenses, where relevant for emergency vehicles. Observation of the upcoming proposal for a European Disability Card. Relevant European Union strategies/activities not directly tied to individual current legislative proposals: European Civil Protection Mechanism (and corresponding funding programmes) / RescEU EU Aid Volunteers / European Solidarity Corps Representation of volunteering in any initiatives touching on the matter (e.g. Social Economy Action Plan, European Year of Skills). Development/role of civil society organisations in EU enlargement (particularly Western Balkans). European Qualifications Framework & Recognition of qualifications where first aid and emergency medicine are concerned
