Mission & Interests

Goals: The RSPCA's mission is to “...by all lawful means, prevent cruelty, promote kindness to and alleviate suffering of all animals”. Founded in 1824, the RSPCA is the world’s oldest animal protection organisation. Our Science & Policy Group consists of 40 animal welfare scientists and technical staff whose work encompasses four areas of concern: companion, farm, wild animals and animals used in science. (1) We work to improve the welfare of companion animals by ensuring that every pet is cared for properly and has a good home; ending cruelty and to pet animals; raising standards for pet animals worldwide; (2) We aim to improve the lives and reduce the suffering of farm animals by: aiming to have all UK farmed animals kept to RSPCA higher welfare standards; improving farm animal welfare legislation and ensuring it is enforced; encouraging consumers to replace meat, eggs and dairy products with those from higher welfare production systems; ensuring animal products are properly labe (...)

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: RSPCA takes an active interest and responds to calls for input on all aspects of EU animal-related policy. Directive 2010/63/EU on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes (see below) RSPCA has co-organised TAIEX events in Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia , Montenegro, FYROM on zoonoses and stray dog control , and RSPCA delivered to regional training in the Western Balkans for 7 countries on Council Regulation 1099/2009 Slaughter/Killing in collaboration with TAIEX. RSPCA staff participated in Better Training for Safer Food as technical experts covering poultry and slaughter issues. RSPCA participated in the EU funded AWARE project , and and IPA project on rabies and disease eradication in Kosovo. RSPCA International was a Member of the EU Platform on Animal Welfare 2017-21.
Communication Activities: Participated in the Commission's Animal Welfare Education ad hoc group from 2009. In China the RSPCA led the 2008 European Commission-supported "The Importance of Animal Welfare Science to Sustainable Agriculture" Conference in Beijing.
