Goals: The respeggt group has the aim to end the culling of day-old male chicks within the egg laying industry. Every year in Europe alone about 330 million male chicks are culled directly after hatching during egg production.This is because cockerels of egg-laying breeds don’t lay eggs and gain less meat than those of typical broiler races. Chick culling is a worldwide phenomenon that poses an ethical dilemma for society. At respeggt group, we have been researching this phenomenon for many years, seeking solutions that put an end to chick culling. And we have found those solutions. We are now able to avoid chick culling by using in-ovo sexing (the so called Respeggt process). In this process the hatching eggs can already be sorted by sex at the 9th day of incubation. The male hatching eggs are produced into high quality feed and only the female hatching eggs return to the incubator. After 21 days of hatching only female chicks hatch that start laying eggs with the age of 20 weeks.
