Goals: The APLO is the professional representative body for Portuguese optometrists and a public utility entity, declared by the government of Portugal. The Association of Licensed Professional Optometrists (APLO) founded on 19 February 1998 as a response to the need of creating an independent organization that promotes and ensures the access to eyecare, ophthalmic medical devices and assistive technology and provides a safeguard of excellence in Optometric care. The mission of the association is to promote primary eye care in a world where no one suffers from visual avoidable visual impairment and blindness. Through its internal regulations, statutes, Code of Ethics, and conduct, it regulates the profession among its members. We are collaborating with national authorities to establish a legal framework for the profession in Portugal, defining the qualifications, skills, and legal requirements for the optometric profession.
