Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: Opes Oceani Foundation Europe builds mutually beneficial relationships with member states, the European Parliament, European Commission and the European Council. This applies especially to the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) and the implementation of Articles 38 to 43 of the Treaty on the functioning of the European Union, particularly in relation to issues influencing the good governance of fisheries - such as the Commons Fisheries Policy, EU fisheries control system and regulations concerning illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing (IUU regulation). At the regional level, this includes taking an interest in the work of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea in relation to its role in setting maximum sustain yields and total allowable catch limits of fishes in cooperation with the Agriculture and Fisheries Council and its advisory bodies, especially the European Parliament Committee on Fisheries (PECH) and its subsidiary regional committees. It also encompasses taking an active interest in the European Maritime Safety Agency and the European Green Deal, including the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive and the FuelEU maritime initiative, which seeks to decarbonise shipping. Furthermore, Opes Oceani Foundation Europe’s field of interest covers the work of the European Environment Agency, especially in relation to the creation and governance of marine protected Areas, as well as the implementation of its 63 legally binding targets and 68 non-binding objectives, in so far as they (as steps toward a green economy) are of relevance to the governance of the ocean within and beyond the EU’s territorial waters.

Opes Oceani Foundation Europe will also contribute to and participate in consultations related to forging the European Union’s policies and relationships with multilateral agreements and intergovernmental bodies and or any organisation or regulatory mechanism concerned with the governance of the world’s oceans. This involves, for example, taking an active interest in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, especially the agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction and the International Seabed Authority, as well as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, International Whaling Commission, the Convention on Biological Diversity, the International Maritime Organisation and the Food and Agricultural Organisation.
