Mission & Interests

Goals: Open Society European Policy Institute (OSEPI) is the legal entity of the Brussels office of the Open Society Foundations, a private foundation that has worked for three decades to promote vibrant and tolerant democracies. OSEPI staff works to inform decision-making on EU laws, policy, funding, and external action to maintain and promote open societies in Europe and beyond. We provide evidence, arguments, and recommendations to policy makers in EU institutions and Member States, drawn from the Open Society Foundations' work in nearly 100 countries.

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: OSEPI staff in Brussels monitors and analyzes all EU initiatives, policies and legislative files likely to have an impact on open society values inside and outside Europe. The foundations’ priorities include: justice, democratic governance, and human rights. We approach this mission through the illuminating principles of justice, equity, and expression—defining characteristics of any truly open society. Complementary Information: Based on work plans and actual activities carried out in 2023 by the 13 staff members directly involved in EU policy activities, 77% FTE were dedicated to EU policy activities (contacts with EU institutions, work towards influencing law or policymaking etc.). This amounts to €1,925,000 of staff cost for 2023.
