Mission & Interests
Goals: Nivel (Netherlands Institute for Healths Services Research) was founded in 1965. Nivel's mission is to carry out high quality research which has a demonstrable impact upon society.
Nivel researchers gather, analyse and synthesize data and information to gain knowledge and insight about the quality and effectiveness of health care delivery and related social services, both in the Netherlands and in Europe.
We believe that the knowledge we create through our research supports the continuous improvement of health and social care for patients and the sustainability of the health care system as a whole.
Nivel's permanent staff consists of senior experts, all with a PhD degree, in various fields. At the end of 2023, Nivel had approximately 170 employees, of whom about 100 were scientific staff, and 50 performed functions related to research and administrative functions.

Main EU Legislative Proposals: Nivel follows all relevant EU initiatives in the field of health and research, such as (but not limited to): the EU Framework Programmes for Research: Horizon Europe.

Organisation Members: Nivel is an active member of the following networks:
• EUPHA – European Public Health Association. Represents European public health experts from research institutes, health policy makers and professionals. The Association has several sections on various public health topics with their own active member lists. The formal members of EUPHA are the National Public Health Associations. Nivel houses the administrative office of EUPHA.
• EFPC - European Forum of Primary Care. The aim of the Forum is to improve the health of the European population by promoting strong Primary Care. Nivel houses the administrative office of EFPC.
• HSPM - Health Systems and Policy Monitor Network, initiated by the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, is an innovative online platform that provides detailed description of health systems and provides up to data information on reforms and changes. Nivel contributes to the Dutch page. Furthermore, the Network initiates and collaborates in international comparative health services research.
