Mission & Interests
Goals: Understanding of the natural world, including human impacts, is essential for our future. The Natural History Museum (NHM) develops and shares its global collection of more than 80 million items for collaborative scientific research and for public engagement and involvement. Our focus is the diversity and evolution of life on Earth, and the geological history and resources of the planet and the wider Solar System. The global challenges of biodiversity loss, climate change, resource security, parasitic disease and invasive species are areas where the NHM collaborates to provide solutions and involve the public as advocates for their future through galleries, programmes, education and citizen science. As a large scientific infrastructure, the NHM gives global access to collections and open databases: increasingly, we serve the needs of molecular science and advanced techniques, using NHM laboratories for chemical analysis and sequencing, and cutting-edge imaging facilities.
