Mission & Interests
Goals: MOAS is a humanitarian service provider dedicated to rapid response, delivering life saving aid and services to communities in crisis around the world. Since them MOAS has provided SAR, healthcare, malnutrition, disaster risk reduction, evacuations and support services in the Mediterranean, Aegean, Bangladesh, Somalia, Yemen, Malta, Italy, Libya, Ukraine and more.
Our mission is to save lives & reduce suffering, particularly of migrants, refugees and displaced people. MOAS is working towards a world where all people are treated with dignity and respect, do not live in fear or have to risk their lives to achieve a decent standard of living. Activities
Main EU Legislative Proposals: MOAS is not a lobbying organization and has had no direct contact with institutions or organizations at an EU level regarding specific policies or proposals. However, MOAS does advocate on behalf of communities in crisis and monitors policies and proposals that have an impact on our operations. These include:
EU migration policies
Dublin 3 amendments/enforcement
Member state resettlement/relocation requirements
Safe and Legal Routes policies (relating to family reunification regulations, private sponsorship etc)
ODA policies (both local in our states of registration and at an EC level) particularly in relation to commitments made for sub-saharan Africa and the Middle East/ South east Asia.
Funding and policies targeted at Libyan Coast Guard
Disembarkation policies for SAR/private vessels at sea
MOAS has also had representatives speak at a Commission level at the Libe Committee, DROI exchange of views on Yemen (for the subcommittee on Human Rights), The European Parliament NGO Conference and so on.
Communication Activities: MOAS regularly runs public relations and communications activities in the field of migration, crisis relief, disaster risk reduction and emergency response. Among MOAS' most public campaigns have been our 2014-2017 operational campaign around Mediterranean search and rescue, where we updated the public on the situation in the Mediterranean and Aegean as reporting on the active search and rescue work of MOAS at that time. The communication and PR campaign involved us embedding many world-leading journalists on our rescue vessels to further raise awareness on the dangers of the Mediterranean crossing and to advocate for increased rescue capacity where needed.
In addition to this MOAS has been running a Safe and Legal Routes campaign for many years. This campaign is focused on the need to exploit and expand alternative pathways to the dangerous smuggling routes into Europe. Therefore we educate the public on existing mechanisms, such as private sponsorship, family reunification, medical evacuations, student visas, direct re-locations and so on, that are designed to give asylum seekers and migrants ways through which to move legally and safely to destination countries. This campaign has seen us spread information online and through speaking events and we plan to extend it into attempts to establish new routes or increased capacity on existing ones.
In addition to this we have spoken consistently on the plight of the Rohingya and the host community in Bangladesh where many reside. The campaign focused on the need for robust and long-term humanitarian programs for this displaced community and the equally vulnerable host community in the area. The campaign highlights gaps in service provision, needs persisting in the refugee community, dangers and risks yet to be mitigated and so on. In addition the campaign highlights the individual stories of the Rohingya and provides a platform for their own testimony. Finally the communications also raise the profile of vital, life-saving work being carried out by MOAS and our fellow agencies operating within this space. This has also been in line with our operations in Bangladesh and our duty to the crisis affected community.
