Mission & Interests
Goals: Mental Health Europe (MHE) is a European non-governmental network organisation committed to the promotion of positive mental health, the prevention of mental distress, the improvement of care, advocacy for social inclusion and the protection of the rights of (ex)users of mental health services, persons with psychosocial disabilities, their families and carers.
MHE works closely with the European Institutions and international bodies to mainstream mental health in all policies and end mental health stigma. Mental Health Europe represents associations and individuals in the field of mental health including users of mental health services, professionals, service providers and volunteers. Together with its members, MHE formulates recommendations for policy makers to develop mental health friendly policies. MHE places users of mental services at the centre of its work to ensure the voice of people who have experienced mental ill health is heard across Europe.

Communication Activities: Mental Health Europe:
• Provides evidence-based input on the critical mental health implications of social, health and justice policy areas to European institutions and other EU stakeholders
• Develops recommendations for policies and strategies focused on mental health issues undertaken by the EU or its Member States.
• Promotes respect of human rights of people with mental health problems
• Mobilises multi-stakeholder exchange on policy areas of relevance to mental health and well-being
Mental Health Europe monitors and analyses EU policy proposals, decisions, legislation, and processes in the field of social and health policy. Policy Officers are responsible for the development and dissemination of position papers and engage in dialogue with the European Institutions and other key stakeholders based on communication and consultation with the Mental Health Europe membership. They also ensure the flow of information and communication between the European Institutions, the Mental Health Europe Secretariat and the members.

Info Members: MHE decision-making bodies reflect the diversity in the organization’s membership. The Board, Executive Committee and President are elected every 3 years. Together with the General Assembly (GA), they form the pillars of the organization and guarantee its democratic decision-making process. The GA is the highest authority and is responsible for formulating the organization’s policy. The Board is the body elected by the GA to develop a strategy for implementing the organization’s policy, while the Executive Committee is elected by the Board and is responsible for the daily management and for supervising the work of the Secretariat.
MHE also has several Committees and Task Forces set up to support the work in specific policy areas or concerning particular topics. The Secretariat is also supported by Senior Policy Advisers, who are specialists in their particular policy areas.
MHE has over 70 member organisations in 33 different countries and a number of individual members.
