Mission & Interests

Goals: The Media & Learning Association (MLA) is an international, not-for-profit membership association which promotes the use of media to enhance innovation in teaching and learning. Our primary areas of interest encompass the application of media to support and enhance teaching in higher education, digital and media literacy, extended reality, artificial intelligence, and the promotion of open educational media resources.

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: (1) The Association focusses on the following priorities of the Civil Society Cooperation in Education and Training (CSC-EDU) 2024 - Improving quality, equity, inclusion and gender equality for all in education and training - Supporting the green and digital transitions in and through education and training - Enhancing competence and motivation in the education profession for teachers and trainers - Making lifelong learning and mobility a reality for all - Contributing to the geopolitical dimension of the European Education Area - Promote active citizenship - Promote the six core EU values [B] Strategic Framework for European cooperation in education and training towards the European Education Area and beyond (2021-2030) In terms of specific policy objectives, the main mission of MLA and its broad objectives match those of the EU as expressed in this framework directly in respect to three of the priorities identified: - Improving quality, equity, inclusion and success for all in education and training, - Enhancing competences and motivation in the education profession, and - Reinforcing European higher education. [C] The Association targets the following actions of the Digital Education Action Plan (2021-2027) - Action 5 - Digital Transformation plans for education and training institutions - Action 7 - Common guidelines for teachers and educators to foster digital literacy and tackle disinformation through education and training - Action 8 - Update the European Digital Competence Framework to include AI and data- related skills
Communication Activities: (1) Organising online workshops and seminars open to members of the civil society engaged in education and training at all levels. (2) Taking part in relevant discussions at European level in order to engage with policymakers and civil society stakeholders to ensure the Media & Learning community is well represented in such fora and in a good position to provide input. These include the different expert and discussion groups on digital innovation and tackling disinformation organised by the European Commission (specifically DG EAC and DG CONNECT). (3) Organising the yearly Media & Learning Conference on Media in Higher Education as well as conferences on Media Literacy. MLA has been running the Media & Learning Conference since 2010 which is organised in collaboration with partners who have included in the past the Flemish Ministry of Education and Training and KU Leuven. These conferences attract between 200 and 300 participants mostly from Europe. They offer a range of different concurrent formats to facilitate a variety of activities including knowledge-sharing, demonstration, networking, co- creation, discussion and presentation. (4) Managing the Media & Learning monthly newsletter reaching more than 10,000 subscribers offering a wide range of topics, including EU policy.
