Activities
Main EU Legislative Proposals: MAXEON first applied for the transparency register to be able to become a member of the European Industry Solar Alliance (ESIA). It has now been a full year, and we are very proud of our engagement. After obtaining a transparency registry number, we could apply to the ESIA and become an active member in three of its four working groups. Maxeon partakes in the working groups of: financing, demand side policies, and supply chain. Our primary goal is to aid the industry re-establish itself in the European Union to achieve industrial independence again. This goal is fully aligned with that of the ESIA, and we believe we have contributed and benefited greatly from being part of this group. We have collaborated with many other companies and entities in the writing of the following policy papers:
- Towards 30GW of PV Manufacturing in Europe: https://solaralliance.eu/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/ESIA_WG-Status-Report-Q2-2023.pdf
- Recommendations paper Series I – Financial Mechanisms to fill the cost gap and restore the PV Industry in Europe: https://solaralliance.eu/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Recommendations-on-financial-mechanisms-to-fill-the-cost-gap-and-restore-the-PV-industry-in-Europe-VF.pdf
- Recommendations paper series II – addressing uncertain antimony content in solar gralls for recycling: https://solaralliance.eu/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Recommendation-on-Addressing-uncertain-antimony-content-in-solar-glass-for-recycling.pdf
- Recommendation paper series III – Effective and practical implementation of non-price criteria in specific public procurement, public auctions, and residential market segments for solar PV systems: https://solaralliance.eu/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/Recommendations-for-an-effective-and-practical-implementation-of-non-price-criteria.pdf
With this last policy recommendation paper, we would like to note that Maxeon is not in favor of the non-price criteria scheme as described in the paper. We do not support the idea of a market segmentation as the document states and we did try to amend this document during its creation but the comments we made were not taken into account.
We are currently helping identify Manufacturing Scale Up Bottlenecks and Provide Recommendations.
MAXEON has been in the Solar PV Manufacturing field for over 20 years. Right now, the primary issue we face to be able to open a factory in the EEA comes from the lack of operational cost subsidy. As many other manufacturers in the field, and as a part of ESMC, we are eager to see a potential policy shift from the EEA. The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) in the United States, strives to re-build industrial independence. Policies like the IRA would aim at re-gaining Solar PV Independence within the EEA and aid the EU reach its green energy target goals. Furthermore, these types of policies help manufacturers develop factories wherever the legislation is in place. Since MAXEON is trying to open a factory in the EEA, our contribution to the Alliance is of great importance. We are proud of having submitted an application for the German funding scheme announced during the summer of 2023. However, we do remain in standby on the BMWK’s decision regarding our letter of interest.
As stated in the 2022 goals’ we are working on international partnerships and global supply chain resilience.
In order for the EU PV Alliance to secure and diversify supplies, it wishes to have discussions and analyze various alternatives. MAXEON has its global headquarters in Singapore, and a complete supply chain that runs worldwide. Furthermore, a clear example of this work comes from the Letter of Interest submitted to the BMWK in the application process for the German funding. Maxeon is very proud of having submitted seven bilateral letters of interest with other companies. These letters were signed with companies across the supply chain to strengthen our European value proposition.
Communication Activities: MAXEON has signed onto the EU PV Industry Alliance press release that was published last week: https://ec.europa.eu/docsroom/documents/52474. We are working on a comprehensive communication plan that includes, but is not limited to: press releases, publications in media, partake in events held within the EU PV industry, launch solar consciousness campaigns, and much more.
One of our primary concerns is circularity and sustainability.
At MAXEON, we hold ourselves to a higher standard. This goes for quality, as well as, all environmental and human rights legislation and best practices worldwide. Maxeon has been a Signatory of the United Nations Global Compact, the world’s largest voluntary corporate sustainability initiative, since December 2020. In 2021, we established our 2030 ESG long-term targets in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This year, Maxeon’s solar panels have achieved Silver Cradle-to-Cradle certification from the Netherlands-based Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. This is a global standard for products that are safe, circular and responsibly made. For this certification, panels go through a rigorous evaluation of sustainable practices in the areas of: material health, material reutilization, renewable energy and carbon management, water stewardship, and social fairness. We are proud of going above and beyond to assure we focus on corporate social responsibility. This is true for all aspects of the company, making ESG and sustainability one of MAXEON's pillars. Because of this, Maxeon is currently chairing the sub-working group of Forced-Labor within the Supply Chain group in ESIA.
