Complementary Information: Option 3 was selected as the Marine Stewardship Council operates in a space where it does not represent commercial interests. The MSC provides standards to which fisheries and chains of custody can opt to be assessed by, and then opt to use the ecolabel on their products. The MSC does not actively influence either decision. It is in the publics' interest to live in a world where overfishing does not occur, as it ensures an enduring protein source for generations to come.
However, the MSC could also be seen to be applicable to Option 1, Section 13 ("Promotes their own interests or the collective interests of their members"), as the MSC is using our ecolabel and fishery certification program to contribute to the health of the world’s oceans by recognising and rewarding sustainable fishing practices, influencing the choices people make when buying seafood and working with our partners to transform the seafood market to a sustainable basis. It is important to point out, however, that the MSC does not have 'members'.
