Goals: Pursuant to the Act XL of 1994 on the Academy (Section 3, paragraph 1), it shall be the public duty of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, in particular, to support the pursuit of scientific activities and the publication of scientific monographs and journals; to operate a system of scientific qualification whereby it shall grant the titles of Doctor, Corresponding Member and Full Member of the Academy; to monitor the trends of scientific research in Hungary and all over the world and based on this, to provide scientific advice for policy; to safeguard the high standards of research integrity and the freedom of scientific research and opinion; to maintain relations with the scientific institutions, especially academies, of other countries, as well as the EU’s scientific organisations.

Activities
Main EU Legislative Proposals: 1) Horizon 2020 Programme (especially the Excellent Science pillar including the European Research Council);
2) Horizon Europe (especially the Excellent Science pillar including the European Research Council)
Communication Activities: In November 2023, during the Academy’s regular Science Festival event series, there were public lectures and panel discussions focusing on a wide range of topics from a large number of scientific fields, ranging from climate change and sustainability to the use of Artificial Intelligence. On November 6th, a roundtable conference was dedicated to the relationship between science and parliament (investigating how science can provide evidence-based policy advice to political decision-makers). The title of the event was "The Science and Policy Interface: Experiences and Possibilities of Evidence-based Policy Advice". Participants of the roundtable discussed, among others, how the science and policy interface is being managed within the institutional framework of the European Union.

Is Member Of: The MTA as a "public association" has approx. 17 thousand members (natural persons) (organized in 11 scientific sections), and until 31 August 2019 MTA had run its own research network comprising 10 research centres, 5 research institutes, and approx. 140 research groups at Hungarian universities and other public institutions. Following the restructuring of the research network of MTA and the launch of operations within the new framework on 1 September 2019, MTA has retained certain quality assessment duties concerning the entities of its former research network. In particular, in 2022 MTA established the title "MTA Centre of Excellence", which it granted to research institutions all over Hungary which had submitted a successful application to an open call for this title.
