Mission & Interests
Goals: KIMO is a network of more than 80 local governments from northern Europe, working together for healthy seas, cleaner beaches, and thriving coastal communities. Our members are committed to finding positive solutions for some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. We are interested in the exchange of knowledge and experience nationally and internationally, following important developments in laws and regulations, and supporting projects with real local impacts. Together, we also seek to reach and influence decision makers at regional, national and international levels in order to protect, preserve and enhance our marine environment.

Activities
Main EU Legislative Proposals: Any issues which pertain to marine sustainability or marine pollution.
KIMO was actively involved with the revision of the PRF Directive and has taken part in the consultation on the EU Plastics Strategy. In addition, we target (inter alia) the Single Use Plastics Directive, Waste Framework Directive, Urban Waste Water Directive, riverine litter pathways, Ship source pollution, environmental liability directive, maritime accidents
Communication Activities: KIMO is a partner in the Interreg CleanAtlantic Project. We have recent publications on mitigation of net cuttings from fisheries, acute plastic pollution spills, ghost gear, sustainable waste management of fisheries litter, microplastic pollution from textiles and maritime transportation of nuclear materials. We have run numerous social media campaigns including most recently on the impacts of PFAS.
