Mission & Interests

Goals: Internews works to ensure access to trusted, quality information that empowers people to have a voice in their future and to live healthy, secure, and rewarding lives. We envision a world where everyone can communicate freely with anyone, anywhere, and exchange the news and information they need to shape their communities and the world. For years and in more than 100 countries, we have worked with our local partners to build hundreds of sustainable organizations, strengthened the capacity of thousands of media professionals, human rights activists, and information entrepreneurs, and reached millions of people with quality, local information, improving lives and building lasting change. Our decentralized and entrepreneurial model gives us the local flexibility to find the best solutions and the nimbleness required to work in a rapidly changing, uncertain and complex world.

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: Internews has been involved in the EU policy landscape since 2013-2014. In particular, Internews was closely involved in drafting the EU Guidelines on Freedom of Expression Online and adopted during the Foreign Affairs Council meeting in 2014. This document reflects some of the core area of operation of Internews: 1. Combating violence and threats against individuals and journalists for exercising their rights to freedom of expression and combating impunity for those crimes 2. Advocate to promote laws and practice that protect freedom of opinion and expression in the countries where we operate 3. Promoting media freedom and pluralism and fostering officials’ understanding of dangers of unwarranted interference 4. Promoting and respecting human rights in cyberspace and other communication technologies EU's Action Plan on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment in External Relations 2020–2025 (GAP III) Internews believes that access to information is a root solution to enabling people of all genders to make informed decisions, participate in dialogue and stand up for their rights. The overarching goal of Internews gender programming is to enable everyone to participate meaningfully and freely in society to achieve their full potential, with emphasis on inclusive and intersectional gender lens: women, girls, and gender and sexual minorities, especially those from minority groups, are disproportionately affected by inequality as critical audiences, content producers, and leaders in the media and information sector. These inequalities preclude societies from achieving gender equality and individuals from achieving their full potential. We also monitor content to ensure that women’s voices are represented equally in the media with men. EU Action Plan on Democracy and Human Rights (2020-2024) Internews is committed to “supporting independent and pluralistic media, access to information and the fight against disinformation”, “promoting fundamental freedoms and strengthening civic and political space” and “protecting people, eliminating inequalities, discrimination and exclusion”. Internews works with many different partners to pursue its advocacy activities, namely: 1. The European Commission: Internews has established close working relationships with EEAS, DG NEAR, DG INTPA, DG ECHO and DG CNECT. 2. The European Delegations in most of the countries in which Internews operates. 3. The European Parliament 4. The European Centre for Press and Media Freedom, mostly through Internews representatives in Berlin. 5. The Council of Europe, mostly through its local offices in Eastern Europe 6. Ministries of Foreign Affairs of different Member States By pursuing all these activities, Internews actively strives to implement the “2030 Agenda”, with a specific focus to SDG number 5 Gender Equality, 10 Reduced Inequalities, 13 Climate Action (through its Environmental Journalism Network Project) and 16 Peace Justice and Strong Institutions, and in line with the EU Action Plan on Human Rights and Democracy 2020 -2024.
Communication Activities: Internews periodically releases policy papers based and reports built on the evidence gathered through our operations. As an example, please find here our URGENT: Understanding and responding to global news threats report, released in March 2023 internews.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/29Mar-URGENT-Report-Final.pdf All Internews policy papers are shared with institutional stakeholders such as the EC, MEPs, and Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Member States. Furthermore, Internews showcases key findings from our projects by organising visibility events for policy makers, such as the presentation of the report “Media consumption in Central Asia: patterns, trends, challenges, and perceptions of the war in Ukraine” (https://fpi.ec.europa.eu/news-1/tackling-disinformation-new-report-media-consumption-central-asia-2023-03-28_en) All policy papers and reports align with Internews’ recent/current programmes/projects that include the following: Global Tech Hub: Internews has been a leader in promoting digital protections for journalists and activists worldwide since 2005. With key partners, we have developed and deployed digital security training resources and techniques and trained thousands of journalists and activists at the international and grassroots levels in 80+ countries worldwide. Internews has led digital safety awareness campaigns, developed circumvention and mobile technologies, and improved access to secure communication channels using resources developed in-house. Internews initially developed the Earth Journalism Network (EJN) in 2004 to enable journalists from low- and middle-income ountries to cover the environment and climate change more effectively. EJN is now a truly global network with over 22,000 members in 180 countries, and works with reporters and media outlets in virtually every region of the world. Health Journalism: Internews’ experience has shown that local media can play a crucial role in communicating health information that can help save lives. Media development interventions, especially those working with health journalists, can also contribute to policy formulation, enhance accountability, reduce myths and misperceptions, and translate complex medical information into actionable information that can help people make informed decisions about their health. An overarching concern is ensuring citizens have access to accurate, timely information to secure the best outcomes for themselves, especially in challenging situations where information is not readily available. Humanitarian interventions: Internews works to ensure that communities in the midst of humanitarian crisis have access to the information they need to make crucial, life-saving decisions: information that is reliable, accessible, trusted and relevant. Internews conducts rapid information ecoystem assessments, conducts online and offline social listening, supports local information providers to create relevant and reliable information, and works at a community level to identify and confront harmful misinformation. During the Covid-19 pandemic Internews worked in 15 countries to counter Covid-19 and other health misinformation in crisis settings. After the outbreak of violence in Sudan in 2023, Internews is working in Sudan and South Sudan to provide reliable information to communities and to support the humanitarian system to improve its accountability to affected populations through strengthened community engagement. Internews also supports independent local media in crisis to ensure that community access to life-saving information is maintained throughout all phases of crisis.
