Mission & Interests

Goals: We commit ourselves to the development of children. Across all domains. Ever since ISSA was founded in 1999 we have grown significantly – providing knowledge and tools to improve the quality of Early Childhood Development. In pre-schools, day care centers and primary schools across Europe. From the secretariat in Leiden (The Netherlands), we gather and create prominent studies and insights on child care and share it with our peers, organization members and policy makers, so they can put them to good use. ISSA came to existence due to the successful start-up and roll out of the Step by Step Program. This multi-disciplinary initiative required the formation of an expert group, a group that would function as overseer of international efforts to consistently grow the quality of Early Childhood Development across Europe. Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: Currently ISSA is involved in the following European projects: 1. Co-baby: The project addresses Early childhood education and care Social assistance and welfare, Initial and continuous training for teachers, trainers and other education staff. The main aim of the project is to promote the establishment and / or enhancement of parent-friendly spaces within co-working organisations 2. Principles of quality education for teachers (PIQET). The goal of this project is to support recruitment, selection and development of PD educators and improvement of in-service professional development (PD) of educators on EU and non-EU level in a way that promotes social justice, interculturalism and human rights in education. 3. Green Learning Community (GREELCO): GREELCO’s overall goal is to create an online learning community that connects ECEC professionals and offers them the opportunity to improve their digital competencies, share their expertise as well as reflect and improve their practice. The project will first empower early childhood education and care professionals in the area of digital competencies by enabling kindergarten professionals from eight countries to develop a set of videos introducing their institution and pedagogical practices. This will allow each kindergarten to organize a virtual study visit to exchange experiences and reflection on practice with other kindergartens professionals. 4. 4E (Early, Equal, Engaged, Empathetic) PARENT. This project aims to promote engaged, caring fatherhood and caring masculinities as a means to prevent GBV, by scaling up and mainstreaming methods and approaches successfully piloted during the EU project PARENT. he project identifies as ultimate beneficiaries fathers/parents to-be and fathers/parents of children 0-6, with a specific focus on the first 1000 days, this being the critical period in which to engage fathers in equal, shared, responsive and empathetic parenting. Since the aim of the project is primary prevention of GBV that is mostly enacted by men, and because men are victims of gender stereotypes that need to be deconstructed for the wellbeing of men, women and children, the main focus is on men as fathers and the transformation of masculinities. However, all actions to promote equal, responsive parenting are also intended to benefit and include same-sex parents.
