Mission & Interests
Goals: IPPNW is a non-partisan federation of national medical groups in 56 countries, representing tens of thousands of doctors, medical students, other health workers, and concerned citizens who share the common goal of creating a more peaceful and secure world freed from the threat of nuclear annihilation. IPPNW is the only international medical organization dedicated to raising public awareness about the devastating humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons. Since there can be no effective medical response to the use of nuclear weapons, our goal is primary prevention, or the abolition of nuclear weapons. IPPNW received the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of this accomplishment.

Activities
Main EU Legislative Proposals: IPPNW is interested in nuclear weapons and nuclear security legislation. Our work is focused on dialogue and education with decision-makers, the general public, medical professionals, and the media about the catastrophic medical, environmental and humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons. Globally, our main legislative focus is universalization of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) and interim arms-reduction and confidence-building measures that reduce the risk of nuclear war and that help build the movement toward a nuclear weapon free world.
Specific legislative topics of interest include:
- 2010/2502(RSP) -- Resolution on the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons
- 2016/2936(RSP) -- Resolution on nuclear security and non-proliferation
- 2018/2715(RSP) -- Iran nuclear agreement
Communication Activities: IPPNW organizes and participates in a wide variety of NGO, UN and other events, meetings and conferences, and produces relevant materials and publications, in order to advance our public education objectives.

Info Members: While IPPNW employs a small number of full and part time staff in both its international secretariat in Malden, MA, USA, and at the IPPNW Geneva Liaison Office in Geneva (totaling between 4-5 FTE positions), the work of our international federation largely is carried out by thousands of volunteer (unpaid) health professionals who dedicate anywhere from a few hours a month to more than 40 hours per week. The above response on the number of persons involved is necessarily a conservative estimate of this variable.
