Mission & Interests

Goals: The International Aviation Waste Management Association (IAWMA) is a non-profit organization dedicating itself to the reduction and eventual elimination of all solid waste resulting from air transport activity worldwide. IAWMA audience members include airports, airlines, flight kitchens, supply chains, collection chains, material science, regulators, universities, government, environmental organizations, and associations. Given the global operational nature of the aviation industry, a more harmonized procurement strategy in conjunction with standardized recovery programs could lead the industry to decreased cost, increased efficiency, and greater environmental stewardship. The aviation industry has shown promise to deliver solutions as a unified, closed, and controlled ecosystem, and to support the aviation industry to a circular economy, the IAWMA will: - Create enhanced recycling programs to ensure global recovery - Develop monetization strategies with supply and collec (...)

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: Regulation (EC) No 1069/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 21 October 2009 laying down health rules as regards animal by-products and derived products not intended for human consumption and repealing Regulation (EC) No 1774/2002 (Animal by-products Regulation), specifically: High Risk > Category 1 (Cat 1) Medium Risk > Category 2 (Cat 2) Low risk > Category 3 (Cat 3)
Communication Activities: International Waste Research - IAWMA was formed based on findings uncovered in the first-ever global independent airline and cabin waste recycling study. Published by the National Academies of Sciences and sponsored by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the study reviewed a cross-section of policy, regulations, and practices in recovering recyclables from the air transport industry. Findings highlight the need for an advanced evidence-based circular economy knowledge platform to stem issues arising from linear consumption. Recovering International Recyclables from In-flight Service (2020) https://nap.nationalacademies.org/catalog/25813/recovering-international-recyclables-from-in-flight-service Global Standards Development - To advance our foundational research, IAWMA and SAE International announced global standards for airlines, airports, and flight kitchens (AAFK). Standards will increase commonality among single-use items and associated end-of-life (EoL) pathways to increase throughput efficiency and work in-line to adapt with evolving policies. Global standards will also provide the foundational support for the future development of national and international policies, recovery programs, which would lend cost/operational efficiency and environmental stewardship.
