Communication Activities: IEP functions as an interface between EU citizens, politicians, decision-makers, the academic world and organisations of civil society at national and European level. It implements its activities in the form of national and international seminars, conferences, fora, study groups, public debates as well as transnational cooperation projects with partner institutes in the EU member states, teaching commitments at German universities and in international master's study programs, publications such as its journal "integration", multi-author books such as the Yearbook of European Integration in its 43nd edition in 2023 and Pocketbook "Europe from A to Z" as online-living edition and print version as well as online publications such as #BerlinPerspectives and Policy Papers. Recurring topics in 2023 included the resilience and future of the EU in the face of crisis as evident in the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian war in Ukraine as well as climate change, EU enlargement policy, institutional reform ideas, Migration and Asylum, the rule of law in Hungary and in Poland after the elections as well as revitalizing multilateral relationships with Latin America and the Caribbean. Those topics were part of discussion in IEPs Annual Conference, Lunch Debates as well as the German Nordic Baltic Forum.
Recent projects include RADAR which aimed at discussing the identification and actions against disinformation. In the RADAR youth lab young EU residents discussed experiences and formulated ideas on how to tackle and combat climate disinformation in the EU. The project RESILIO assesses the rule of law resilience of all 27 member states using a systematic analytical framework in order to deliver counterstrategies to the regression of the rule of law in the EU. IEP furthermore organises expert exchanges on the value of foresight methods for policy planning and initiated a strategy group on the future of EU enlargement policies. In 2023 policy papers formulated recommendations on the EU’s instruments to counter rule of law backsliding in EU member states, how to move forward with EU-Turkey relations after the parliamentary and presidential elections in 2023 and how to tackle rule of law and democratic backsliding in Hungary. Furthermore, IEP contributed to discussions on possibilities of the Western Balkans accession process through the WB2EU project with debates and policy papers. The multimedia-based distribution of results via IEP's website, the monthly IEP newsletter, and Social Media Presence was further developed to reach a wide audience and have a strong leverage effect as well as focusing on elements of civic education.
