Activities
Main EU Legislative Proposals: IAC's interest lies in several topics, namely: 1. Promoting an enabling environment for CSOs to be better able to contribute to sustainable development, governance reform, and gender equality in Indonesia. Several ways to achieve this are: 1) Capacity building and organizational strengthening activities; 2) Encouraging CSOs to participate in policy dialogue with national and local authorities, representing and voicing the concerns of vulnerable and marginalized groups, and holding governments to account; and 3) Encouraging CSOs to achieve financial sustainability by accessing new funding sources, including public funding, without diminishing their independence. 2. Access to affordable medicines and vaccines, especially life-saving medicines for HIV-AIDS, TB, and Hepatitis C.
Referring to the interests stated above as well as IAC's experience and core business, IAC generally monitors and engages in Health and International Aid policy themes, such as the EU Global Health Strategy, Compulsory Licensing, and the International Pandemic Accord. We also pay special attention to the ongoing Indonesia-EU Comprehensive Partnership Agreement (CEPA) negotiation process, especially in regard to the IP Chapter and its impact on access to affordable medicines (for HIV-AIDS, TB, and Hepatitis C). In summary, our work is in line with the EU International Strategies, which also align with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly the development and strengthening of health systems, through capacitating and empowering the community to take part in the improvement of the health system itself.
Furthermore, our work also contributes to gender empowerment and promotes gender equality in all aspects, particularly in reducing gender-based violence and combating discrimination against gender minorities. Specifically, our current and future work will contribute to the EU’s policies, as elaborated below: 1. International Partnership Policies: Gender equality, human development (health and demography, reducing inequalities, social protection, and strengthening health systems), and peace and governance (civil society, democracy, human rights, and fundamental values). 2. Justice and Fundamental Rights Policies: International gender equality, international human rights, EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, and combating discrimination. 3. Public Health Policies and Actions: Health Emergency Preparedness and Response (HERA), international cooperation, health security and infectious diseases, vaccination, improving the health system, improving access to pharmaceutical components, and promoting good health. The work and actions will also be in conjunction with the EU Global Health Strategy as part of the Global Gateway.
Communication Activities: The IAC has carried out a number of communication activities (campaigns, publications, etc.) in relation to the I-EU CEPA.
1. The formulation of policy briefs regarding FTA, TRIPS, & I-EU CEPA and their impact on access to affordable medicines. This policy brief has been submitted to the Indonesian Minister of Health; 2. The formulation of an open letter, which can be accessed via: https://igj.or.id/2023/05/09/open-letter-to-eu-commission-drop-trips-plus-provision-on-indonesia-eu-cepa/?lang=en;
3. Networking activities with European CSO partners and audiences with representatives from Left MEPs, as well as advisors to the Committee on International Trade (INTA);
4) Consolidation activities with fellow members of the Indonesian Civil Society Coalition for Economic Justice (Masyarakat untuk Keadilan Ekonomi/MKE) and media briefing activities to respond to the 16th I-EU CEPA negotiation round in Brussels, Belgium; and
5) Audience with the Directorate of Bilateral Negotiations of the Indonesian Ministry of Trade regarding progress with the I-EU CEPA negotiation process. In the latter half of 2023, IAC also conducted hearings with representatives of the European Parliament and the European Union Ambassador to Indonesia.
