Mission & Interests
Goals: Hong Kong Watch is a UK registered charity founded in 2017, consisting of Hong Kongers and friends of Hong Kong, working closely with Hong Kong community groups in the diaspora.
We inform and educate legislators, policy-makers and the media, and raise awareness among the wider public, about the violations of human rights, basic freedoms and the rule of law in Hong Kong, and advocate for actions to assist Hong Kongers. We do this through a combination of in-depth research reports, regular topical briefings, opinion editorials, media briefings and interviews, and advocacy campaigns.
We also help integrate, support, welcome and strengthen the capacity of the Hong Kong diaspora, through a programme of civic and political education and community engagement.

Activities
Main EU Legislative Proposals: Since the Summer of 2020, Hong Kong Watch has been campaigning against the adoption and ratification of the EU-China Comprehensive Agreement on Investment, arguing that it would reward China with favoured access to European markets at a time when it is dismantling Hong Kong’s autonomy, violating international treaties, and undertaking gross human rights violations within its borders. We have done this in individual meetings with Members of the European Parliament. (https://www.hongkongwatch.org/euchina)
We have also been calling for the EU to step up to help Hong Kongers through suspending extradition treaties with the People’s Republic of China and Hong Kong, lifeboat measures and sanctions. (https://www.hongkongwatch.org/international-lifeboat-campaign, https://www.hongkongwatch.org/extradition)
Most recently, we are campaigning against the establishment of Huawei and BYD factories in France and Hungary, respectively, given the companies' extensive ties to the Chinese Communist Party and complicity in human rights violations in Hong Kong, Xinjiang and elsewhere. Please find our briefing for Members of the European Parliament here: https://static1.squarespace.com/static/58ecfa82e3df284d3a13dd41/t/65a8e7e6531574783e7eacb1/1705568231939/Huawei+and+BYD+Meet+Hong+Kong_+Economic%2C+Ethical%2C+and+Security+Risks+to+the+EU.pdf
Communication Activities: There is an Informal Hong Kong Watch Group in the European Parliament. We maintain communication with a number of MEPs and parliamentarians on the country-level throughout the EU. Individual Members of the European Parliament serve as Patrons for Hong Kong Watch, which are politicians around the world who champion our cause to defend the fundamental freedoms of Hong Kongers worldwide.
We have worked with Members of European Parliament to draft EU resolutions related to Hong Kong: https://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/de/press-room/20230609IPR96215/human-rights-breaches-by-russia-in-sudan-and-in-hong-kong, https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/B-9-2022-0358_EN.html
We have made many trips to Brussels to establish relationships with MEPs and discuss our latest campaigns and reports. Most recently, our CEO Benedict Rogers visited to Brussels to share his groundbreaking report on the state of religious freedom or belief in Hong Kong (https://www.hongkongwatch.org/all-posts/2023/11/7/hong-kong-watch-launches-groundbreaking-new-report-on-threats-to-freedom-of-religion-or-belief-in-hong-kong).
This year, we plan to establish relationships with new Members of the European Parliament who are elected, and to provide a policy roadmap to Members of European Parliament on policies that should be adopted to help Hong Kongers at home and throughout the EU.
We plan to visit Brussels two or three times this year, and twice per year. Our work thus far also includes:
