Mission & Interests

Goals: Háttér Society, founded in 1995, is the largest and oldest currently operating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI) organization in Hungary. Our aims are calling attention to the problems faced by LGBTQI people; providing support services; exploring the situation and needs of LGBTQI people; mainstreaming these concerns in laws and public services; protecting the human rights of LGBTQI people and countering discrimination against them; promoting the health and well-being of LGBTQI people; encouraging the self-organization of LGBTQI communities; and preserving and spreading LGBTQI heritage and culture.

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: We work to mainstream the human rights of LGBTQI people into all policy areas. We pay particular attention to anti-discrimination directives, EU internal human rights and rule of law mechanisms, EU LGBTIQ strategy, employment and social inclusion, gender equality initiatives, hate crime and hate speech, freedom of movement, asylum, data protection, policy initiatives regarding non-discrimination in the area of health and education. We currently work on the horizontal anti-discrimination directive, binding standards on equality bodies, the list of EU crimes in TFEU, the victims’ rights directive, the directive on the recognition of parenthood between Member States, and the directives on safety and quality of human blood and blood components, and on safety and quality of human tissues and cells.
