Main EU Legislative Proposals: Grown bio wants to support the reduction and phase our of EPS and other plastic foams in Europe. This objective is already defined by the EU as part of the proposal for a Regulation on packaging and packaging waste, published on 30 november 2023. As an important element of this proposal, plastics - including plastic foam like Expanded PolyStyrene EPS - should be either re-used or recycled. For EPS this is not a realistic objective for two main reasons. First EPS packaging will be polluted and damaged during the use, which makes it difficult to re-use. Second recycling requires collection, which is not in place in most member states. With regards to this second reason, even if collection and recycling would be in place, end users will not take the effort to acutally offer EPS for recycling: in the most favourable cased it is incineerated, but mostly it ends up as landfill. The landfilled styrene microparts cause damage to nature, serious risk for human health. The support that Grown bio can give is by offering EPS producting industries a solution in the form of a fully bio based and (home/marine) compostable protective packaging.
