Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: The Green Deal Uganda's interest in influencing the EU Directive on corporate sustainability due diligence stems from several key factors: Global Supply Chains: Many Ugandan businesses are part of global supply chains, particularly in industries like agriculture, textiles, and minerals. The EU Directive on corporate sustainability due diligence aims to ensure that companies operating within the EU, as well as those supplying goods and services to the EU market, adhere to strict sustainability standards throughout their supply chains. This includes measures to prevent human rights abuses, environmental degradation, and unethical practices. By influencing this directive, Green Deal Uganda can advocate for standards that promote sustainable and ethical practices within these supply chains, benefiting Ugandan businesses and workers. Environmental Conservation: Uganda is rich in natural resources, including diverse ecosystems, wildlife, and forests. However, these resources are often threatened by activities such as deforestation, pollution, and unsustainable land use practices. The EU Directive on corporate sustainability due diligence places emphasis on environmental protection and conservation efforts throughout the supply chain. Green Deal Uganda can advocate for provisions within the directive that encourage responsible environmental stewardship, helping to preserve Uganda's natural heritage for future generations. Social Justice and Human Rights: Ensuring respect for human rights and promoting social justice are fundamental principles of sustainable development. Unfortunately, workers in many industries, including agriculture and mining, face exploitation, unsafe working conditions, and other human rights violations. The EU Directive on corporate sustainability due diligence seeks to address these issues by requiring companies to assess and mitigate human rights risks in their operations and supply chains. By influencing this directive, Green Deal Uganda can push for measures that protect the rights and well-being of Ugandan workers, contributing to fair and equitable economic development. Economic Opportunities: Adopting sustainable practices can create new economic opportunities for Ugandan businesses. By aligning with the EU's sustainability standards, Ugandan companies can access new markets, attract investment, and enhance their competitiveness on the global stage. The EU Directive on corporate sustainability due diligence can serve as a framework for guiding these efforts, providing clarity and consistency in expectations for responsible business conduct. Green Deal Uganda can advocate for support mechanisms, capacity building initiatives, and other resources to help local businesses comply with the directive and unlock the benefits of sustainable growth. Overall, influencing the EU Directive on corporate sustainability due diligence presents a significant opportunity for Green Deal Uganda to promote environmental conservation, social justice, and economic development in Uganda. By advocating for robust sustainability standards and responsible business practices, Green Deal Uganda can contribute to a more sustainable and equitable future for the country.
Communication Activities: Green Deal Uganda (GDU) is committed to promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility within Uganda and globally. As part of our advocacy efforts, we have undertaken various communication events aimed at influencing the EU Directive on corporate sustainability due diligence. One significant initiative involved developing a comprehensive paper for the Uganda Coffeee Development Authority (UCDA) to present to the EU Commission in Brussels. Communication Events: Research and Analysis: GDU conducted extensive research on the EU Directive on corporate sustainability due diligence, examining its implications for both European and international businesses. We analyzed the potential benefits and challenges of the directive for Uganda and other developing countries, focusing on how it could affect trade relations and sustainable development goals. GDU collaborated with UCDA experts to develop a comprehensive policy paper outlining Uganda's perspective on the EU Directive. The paper highlighted Uganda's commitment to sustainability, emphasized the need for capacity-building support, and proposed recommendations for ensuring the directive's compatibility with the realities of developing economies. Advocacy Campaign: GDU launched an advocacy campaign to raise awareness about the EU Directive among Ugandan stakeholders. This campaign included media outreach, social media engagement, and targeted communication with policymakers to garner support for UCDA's presentation to the EU Commission. UCDA, with support from GDU, presented the policy paper to the EU Commission in Brussels. The presentation provided a platform for Uganda to articulate its concerns, share insights, and advocate for inclusive and equitable implementation of the directive that considers the needs of developing countries. Green Deal Uganda's communication efforts on the EU Directive on corporate sustainability due diligence have been multifaceted, involving research, stakeholder engagement, policy paper development, advocacy campaigns, and support for UCDA's presentation in Brussels. By actively participating in the policy dialogue, GDU aims to ensure that the directive promotes sustainable development while considering the unique challenges and opportunities faced by countries like Uganda.
