Goals: The Global Medical Device Nomenclature (GMDN) is a system of internationally agreed-upon terms for identifying medical devices. The GMDN Agency is a registered UK charity and non-profit organisation responsible for maintaining the GMDN database.
The Agency was established to provide health authorities and regulators, healthcare providers, manufacturers and others with a system that allows an exchange of medical device information and supports patient safety.
The GMDN is used to identify medical devices of the same generic type. This supports product identification, market surveillance, vigilance, signal detection and other healthcare management activities. Members search the online database for the GMDN Term that describes their product. Each GMDN Term has a Definition and 5-digit Code. Access is only available to Members, and membership is priced according to organisation type and size. Some membership categories are free.
