Mission & Interests

Goals: GLOBAL 2000 (Friends of the Earth Austria) is a non-profit, non-partisan, and non-confessional federal NGO. Donations and membership fees make up 65 per cent of GLOBAL 2000’s revenue and ensure its political independence. GLOBAL 2000 was founded in 1982. Above all, GLOBAL 2000's focus is on achieving an ecological sustainable society, which provides a good life for everybody, inside the ecological boundaries of the planet. To this end, GLOBAL 2000 closely monitors the development of environmental policy in Austria and the EU and is committed to ecological fairness and a future worth living both locally and around the globe. Since 1982, GLOBAL 2000 has been working to uncover potential hazards for humans and the environment. Main EU Legislative Proposals: In GLOBAL 2000) federal agency in Vienna 7 staff are dealing with the policy aspects of regenerative energies, infrastructure planning, sustainability, suffiency and circular economy, species and nature conservation, the risks of nuclear power, climate change, genetic engineering, chemistry and other environmental topics as far as policy formulation is concerned. The contact with members or officials of the EU institutions with the objective of influencing the policy formulation and decision-making processes of the European institutions had mainly taken place through Friends of the Earth Europe in Brussels. Direct contact by GLOBAL 2000 staff had primarily taken place with respect to Austrian MEPs and representatives in the EU institutions.
