Mission & Interests
Goals: GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is among the largest non-university research institutions in the field of marine sciences in Germany (1000 staff, incl. 450 experienced scientists and 150 doctoral candidates), and a member of the Helmholtz Association, Germany’s largest non-university scientific organisation. The centre’s mandate is the inter- and multidisciplinary investigation of all relevant aspects of modern marine sciences, from sea floor geology through physical, chemical and biological oceanography to marine meteorology. Research is conducted worldwide in all oceans. GEOMAR cooperates closely with national and international research institutions and with a number of SMEs active in marine technology and science, bridging the gap between basic and applied science in several areas. The scientific breadth and the state-of-the-art infrastructure gives GEOMAR a unique profile and a central collaborative role within the German and international marine science community.

Activities
Main EU Legislative Proposals: Mainly R&I policy: Horizon Europe (in particular: Clusters 4, 5, 6; Widening; Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions, European Research Council, Infrastructures; Mission Ocean and Mission Climate; European Partnerships); European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF).
Communication Activities: GEOMAR engages in mainly project-related activities for knowledge transfer, which focus on informing decision-makers, stakeholders and the interested public. As a rule of thumb, policy implementation and communication activities are part of the “measures to maximize impact” of all the EU projects in which GEOMAR scientists participate. In addition, GEOMAR scientists are involved in numerous national and international advisory bodies and committees and this involvement is key to participating in policy- and decision-making. Some recent specific examples include:
- EU policy brief on "inefficiency of chlorination in preventing alien species in ballast water" - https://ec.europa.eu/environment/integration/research/newsalert/pdf/544na1_en_chlorination-of-ballast-water.pdf

- An impulse talk by the EU project Baltic Gender at the Europe Jam on "Gender in Europe" as part of the online discussion series Europe 2.0 organised by the NGO Democracy International (https://youtu.be/150mn5BWPQE)

- Brochure (German and English) " Climate Engineering and our climate targets - a long-overdue debate), which aims to promote an informed social and political debate on the possibilities and risks of the various approaches to climate engineering in an open-ended manner, using the best available knowledge. - A database for fish, collecting research on fish growth, weight-length relationships, reproduction (maturity, fecundity, spawning), food and diet composition, introductions (https://www.fishbase.org/home.htm)
