Mission & Interests
Goals: The Port of Galway aims to be an engine of Ireland’s future economic prosperity. Located in the largest city in the West of Ireland, we have plans to relocate and redevelop the inner dock area, thereby stimulating commercial activities and the development of the inner-city lands. The company's remit is to be a key driver of economic, social and territorial cohesion in the West.
These expansion plans will allow us to build on our core business and provide better services to existing and future customers. An expanded Port can also play a key role in the development of offshore wind, off our Atlantic Coast thereby allowing the region to invest in sustainable and environmental industry solutions in the future. We have significant experience of supporting the onshore wind sector - 0.6W of onshore wind processed through Galway by end of 2023; the outlook is strong for 2024 and beyond. A relocated and expanded Port will enable us to provide better facilities to this sector.

Activities
Main EU Legislative Proposals: The Galway Harbour Company is 100% owned by Galway City Council and is tasked with the operation and the development of the Port of Galway and its associated property land bank located within the Port area of Galway City. We operate under the Harbours Act 1996 (as amended).
The Port of Galway is a strong supporter of the EU’s transport infrastructure policy as set out in the Trans European Transport Network (TEN-T) Regulation (2013/1315). The 2013 Regulation has recognised for the first time the importance of seaports as primary nodes of multimodal transport by identifying core and comprehensive ports. At the EU's Transport Council meeting in Brussels in December 2023, there was agreement that the Port of Galway would be included on the TEN-T network of European Ports. The achievement of TEN-T status for the Port represents an important milestone; it is an acknowledgement, at an EU level, of the strategic importance of the Port of Galway and enables us to apply for funding under the Connecting Europe facility.
