Mission & Interests

Goals: The Future of Life Institute (FLI) is a nonprofit that works on maximising the benefits of technology and on mitigating its associated risks. In our current engagement with the EU institutions, FLI has two key priorities: i) promoting the beneficial development of artificial intelligence, ii) regulating lethal autonomous weapons.

Complementary Information: i) More information about our finances can be found on this webpage: https://futureoflife.org/about-us/finances/ ii) FLI only engaged in limited fundraising in 2023 and our total income amounted to 624,714 USD. One individual, Erik Otto, donated 600,000 USD to support our general operating work. All other donations were small grassroots and PayPal donations. iii) Our budget deficit was covered entirely by our endowment, which has been provided by Vitalik Buterin in 2021. This funding has helped FLI maintain its independence. We are also using his donated funds to support a multi-year grant program: https://futureoflife.org/grantmaking/fli-announces-grants-program-for-existential-risk-reduction/ iv) FLI holds no cryptocurrency. v) The budget figure provided is for the Future of Life Institute globally, of which our EU activities are a small part. The total budget amount does not include our external regranting (e.g. our PhD fellowships). vi) With the exception of the Estonian Skype co-founder Jaan Tallinn, who has served on FLI’s Board of Directors since its 2014 founding, donors do not influence our policy positions.
