Mission & Interests

Goals: Fundación ICAMCyL, International Center in Advanced Materials and raw materials of Castilla y León, is a private non-profit foundation, competence centre, created and supported by the Government of Castilla y León, to foster the development of advanced materials for the regional industrial network, and to valorise the richness in raw materials of Castilla y León, in line with its RIS3. ICAMCyL has been founded thanks to the interest and economical contribution of the main industries of Castilla y León, being shareholders or part of its industrial panel relevant international companies in the sectors of raw materials, critical raw materials and their transformation, glass, engineering and advanced technologies.

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: ICAMCYL takes part of the international strategy of industrial resource efficiency management, energy efficiency, eco-innovation and critical materials substitution, being directly related to the European Innovation Partnership in Raw Materials (EIP-Raw Materials). ICAMCyL, in representation of the regional government of Castilla y León, has been co-founder and co-leads two key European initiatives linked to the Smart Specialisation Platform for Industrial Modernisation (S3P-Industry) which aims to support EU regions committed to generate a pipeline of industrial investment projects following a bottom-up approach - implemented through interregional cooperation, cluster participation and industry involvement.

Communication Activities: ICAMCYL takes part of the international strategy of industrial resource efficiency management, energy efficiency, eco-innovation and critical materials substitution, being directly related to the European Innovation Partnership in Raw Materials (EIP-Raw Materials). Moreover, ICAMCyL contributes to the necessary clustering actions in Europe. In close cooperation with the Government of Castilla y León (DG Energy and Mines), we define and adapt regional integrated roadmaps in synergy with the RIS3 in Castilla y León and mirroring to other EU regions and its smart regional specialization. ICAMCyL is working intensively in ICT solutions and data management of raw materials and reserves in the territory. We have already created a catalogue of tailings with digital access and we will contribute to the RMIS initiative (http://rmis.jrc.ec.europa.eu/). ICAMCyL is a key agent in the coal transition strategic roadmap of Castilla y León Region, promoting currently two innovation poles and building a social restructuration plan with León council for the restoration of villages and provinces with a long history and high economic dependence from coal mining. “Creation and Integration of Novel Industrial Value Chains for SMEs in the Raw Materials & Mining Sectors through ICT, Circular Economy, Resource Efficiency & Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Support” (MINE.THE.GAP). Call: INNOSUP-01- 2019 Cluster facilitated projects for new industrial value chains. (Starting in September 2020) ICAMCYL Role: COORDINATOR The overall aim of MINE.THE.GAP is to provide a support platform for the reinforcement of existing value chains and the development of new industrial value chains in the raw materials & mining sectors by means of cross-sectoral and cross-regional innovation and support services in cluster-related SMEs through synergies and interactions with providers and facilitators from the existing and emerging fields of ICT, circular economy, resource efficiency and advanced manufacturing. “For the Circular Economy of Tyre Domain: Recycling End of Life Tyres into New Tyres” (BLACKCYCLE) (Grant Agreement No. 869625). Call: CE-SC5-07b-2019 Recycling of raw materials from end-of-life products. (Starting in June 2020) ICAMCYL Role: Partner BLACKCYCLE has an upcycling ambition, targeting to create a massive circular economy of the end-of-life tyre (ELT) into technical applications like tyre industry by producing high technical second raw materials (SRMs) from ELT. “Recovery of Tungsten, Niobium and Tantalum occurring as by-products in mining and processing waste streams” (TARANTULA) (Grant Agreement No. 821159). Call: CE-SC5- 06-2018 - New technologies for the enhanced recovery of by-products. ICAMCYL Role: Partner https://h2020-tarantula.eu/ TARANTULA will develop a suite of cost-effective, scalable and eco-friendly – bio-, hydro-, iono-, solvo-, pyro and electro-metallurgical – processes with high selectivity and recovery rates towards new routes for market ready metals, metal oxides and metal carbides. “Mining and metallurgy regions of Europe” (MIREU) (Grant Agreement No. 776811). Call: H2020-SC5-15-2016-2017: Raw materials policy support actions (CSA) ICAMCYL Role: Partner https://mireu.eu/ MIREU aims to establish a network of mining and metallurgy regions across Europe with the aim of securing the sustained and sustainable supply of raw materials to the EU, helping the regions to share knowledge and experiences when facing the challenge to establish and maintain an extractive industry.
