Mission & Interests

Goals: FIERI is an indipendent research institute specialising on migration, mobility, diversity and inclusion/exclusion processes. Since its foundation in 2001, it is strongly committed to a comparative and interdisciplinary approach to the study of the social and political transformations associated with growing population mobility and cultural diversity. FIERI adopts a comprehensive view of those changes which goes beyond an exclusive focus on migrants and their descendants, and considers instead the whole society and local communities as transformed by migration and mobility. FIERI is actively engaged in European and international networks and, at the same time, deeply rooted in the Italian context also through proactive interactions with policy, media and civil society.

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: As a research institute specialising on migration and migration policies, generating policy-relevant knowledge is a key institutional mission for FIERI. With specific regard to EU-level policies, we monitor and analyse all migration- and mobility-related policies amongst which, in particular: legal migration with special regard to labour migration, the external dimension of migration policies, asylum and international protection, policies on borders and irregular migration, integration, intra-EU mobility, anti-discrimination. In 2023, we have devoted specific research attention to the production and impact of media and societal narratives on migration, to protracted displacement and marginalisation processes of forced migrants, and to interplays between EU’s migration agenda and its long-term vision for rural areas.
Communication Activities: Several of our projects have a European dimension due to the topic (e.g. research on EU-level policymaking) and/or to the source of funding. Amongst our main ongoing or recently concluded projects that are benefitting of EU funding, are the following: EU-funded projects: - http://www.medreset.eu/ (2016 – 2019).
