Mission & Interests

Goals: Fondazione per le scienze religiose is a research institution that publishes, trains, serves, organizes and communicates research in the field of religious sciences, with particular regard to Christianity, Islam and the religions with which they have had contacts. Final destination of a journey begun in 1953 and recognized as a Foundation by a decree of the President of the Italian Republic, FSCIRE has an agreement with the University of Bologna and other universities: it operates in conditions of full autonomy from churches and universities, collecting funds from public and private donations, foundations, companies and cooperatives and creating synergies with other centers. FSCIRE continues the scientific research in the field of historical-religious disciplines begun by Giuseppe Dossetti (1913-1996) and developed by Giuseppe Alberigo (1926-2007), who has been its soul and secretary for almost fifty years. FSCIRE has been recognized since 2014 as a national research infrastructure.

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: FSCIRE main interests are the funding programmes for research activities. In particular, we have been following the Horizon2020 programme and its various calls for proposals relating to Societal Challenges and we are now interested in the new programme Horizon Europe. At the same time, FSCIRE is leader in the creation of a European Research Infrastructure for Religious Studies, thus it follows the ESFRI initiatives and is interested in the many complementary funding opportunities. In 2018, FSCIRE, as Project Coordinator and together with 11 European partners, has signed the Grant Agreement n° 730895, for the H2020 INFRAIA Project ReIReS, whose aim is to build a starting community for an infrastructure on religious studies. ReIReS implements the idea that “Knowledge Creates Understanding”, bringing knowledge into the field of religious pluralism in Europe, thus contributing to a stable society. In 2019, FSCIRE, as Project Coordinator and together with 11 European partners, has signed the Grant Agreement n°871127: the H2020 INFRADEV project named RESILIENCE, whose aim is to bring a European infrastructure for religious studies into the ESFRI Roadmap 2021. Resilience project officially entered the ESFRI Roadmap 2021. In 2022 Fscire signed Grant Agreement no. 101079792 as coordinator of the Horizon Europe project called RESILIENCE PPP to support the preparation phase with 12 other partners.
Communication Activities: The editorial activity which derives from the researches carried on at FSCIRE is expressed in the journal Cristianesimo nella Storia (http://www.fscire.it/index.php/en/publications/cristianesimo-nella-storia/) and in book series (http://www.fscire.it/index.php/en/series/) which are published in various languages for an international audience. News, events and updates on the main activities of FSCIRE (libraries, research projects, training programs, editorial news and much more) are collected in the magazine IN DIEM (http://www.fscire.it/index.php/en/publications/in-die-magazine/), which is issued periodically. In 2016 FSCIRE launched the European Academy of Religion (https://www.europeanacademyofreligion.org/) with a public event gathering more than three hundred institutions (research centers and scholarly associations, departments and scientific journals, publishers and media) and five hundred delegates. FSCIRE also hosts the UNESCO Chair in Religious Pluralism and Peace (http://www.fscire.it/index.php/en/networking-en/unesco-chair/) of the University of Bologna, which contributes to the dialogue between cultures and faith communities through the formation of researchers, in the belief that peace for future generations can be constructed through historical research and true confront. The Chair holder is Prof. Dr. Alberto Melloni.
