Mission & Interests

Goals: The EUROPARC Federation, known as the "Federation of Nature and National Parks of Europe", was founded in 1973. The aim of the organisation is to help protected areas fulfil their role as preservers of the natural beauty of Europe in all its variety for us to experience and enjoy, to encourage cooperation and exchange between their managers and staff, and to promote their aims and work across Europe. EUROPARC's mission is to be the leading European organisation for protected areas bringing together dedicated professionals, governmental agencies, decision makers and supporters to increase effectiveness in conserving and enhancing natural and cultural heritage on land and sea for the well-being and benefit of current and future generations.

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: The EUROPARC Federation is active – both in terms of advocacy and implementation – in the following policy areas: EU Environmental Action program; EU biodiversity strategy; EU Green Deal; Nature Directives; Water Framework Directive; Nature Restoration legislation; EU Action Plan for People, Nature and Economy; EU strategy for Smart, Sustainable & Inclusive Growth; EU Vision to 2050; Roadmap to a Resource Efficient Europe; Green Infrastructure Strategy; EU Youth Strategy 2019-2027; EU Solidarity Corp initiative; Common Agricultural Policy (CAP); EU Cohesion Policy; EU 2050 Climate Strategy; European Territorial Cooperation (ETC); Invasive Alien Species regulation; Coexistence between people and large carnivores (European Platform); LIFE regulation; At international level EUROPARC is also working in close cooperation with the Council of Europe to ensure, at wider scale, coherence and consistency of policies relevant for protected areas across Europe.
Communication Activities: EUROPARC works both for implementation and development of EU policies, with a main focus on Nature and Biodiversity. EUROPARC is currently actively involved in the following: the effective implementation of the Natura 2000 Network; the Green Infrastructure Strategy; the integration of biodiversity priorities within agriculture and tourism policies; the knowledge improvement on ecosystem services and wilderness conservation.Sustainable Tourism, Regional Development, Common agricultural policy, Youth Education and Climate Change are also other policies we follow from close, both in terms of development and implementation. Main activities include: - an active work on communication to ensure that information are delivered in both directions: from managers towards the EU decision makers and from them back to the managers. EF publishes monthly news and an annual publication Protected Areas In-Sight. Further an annual report is also published every year. - EF organizes annually an international conference for 300 PA managers and experts from all over Europe. - We organize also seminars, workshops and trainings for members and partners to ensure the exchange of good practices, increase the awareness on EU policies and to raise the awareness and expertise in PAs management. - EF is actively involved in several international projects with partners from all over Europe to support PA and improve the management of natural resources. For details: https://www.europarc.org/about-us/europarc-projects/ - With DG Environment EUROPARC regularly attends and contributes to CGBN and NADEG meetings; occasionally contributes to Nature Directors meetings; is member and actively contributes to the work of the European Platform for Coexistence between people and large carnivores; is member of the Natura 2000 and Green Infrastructures Expert Group. EUROPARC also contributes to the N2000 Biogeographical Seminar process. With the European Habitats Forum, we follow from close the Nature and Biodiversity policies development and implementation and have regular meetings with partner organisation and the EC. Organisation Members: EUROPARC Federation is a member of: IUCN: the world’s oldest and largest global environmental network - a democratic membership union with more than 1,000 government and NGO member organizations, and almost 11,000 volunteer scientists in more than 160 countries. European Habitats Forum (EHF): a group of NGO networks that provide input and advice to DG Environment and the Nature Directors in EU Member States, particularly relating to the implementation of the Birds and Habitats Directives and the establishment of the Natura 2000 network. CAP NGO coalition: a group of NGO actively engaged to promote sustainable agriculture policies and practices in the EU EUROPARC holds participatory status at the Council of Europe - in the INGO assembly. We chair the committee for Heritage, Health, Biodiversity and Climate. We are member of the Expert Group on Protected Areas and Ecological networks in the Bern Convention.
