Mission & Interests
Goals: The European University Institute (EUI) is an international postgraduate teaching and research institute. Set up in 1972 by the six founding Member States of the European Communities, its aim is to provide advanced academic training for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers and to foster research in fields that are of particular interest for the development of Europe. The EUI opened its doors to its first researchers in November 1976.
Today, there are 23 contracting states to the EUI, and it hosts an international community of more than 1100 people.
The three pillars of activity of the EUI are: Training of Early Stage Researchers through excellent research, Policy-Relevant Research, and Postgraduate and Executive Education. In all three areas, the EUI delivers real benefits to European societies by reinforcing Europe’s higher education and research area, and its policy-making abilities.
