Mission & Interests

Goals: SedNet is a European, multi-stakeholder network aimed at incorporating sediment issues and knowledge into European strategies to support the achievement of a good status or potential and to develop new tools for sediment management. Our focus is on all sediment quality and quantity issues on a river-sea system scale, ranging from freshwater to estuarine and marine sediments. SedNet brings together professionals from science, administration and industry. It interacts with the various networks in Europe that operate at a national or international level or that focus on specific fields (such as science, policy making, sediment management, industry, education).

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: SedNet in the last (2) years targeted the EU: 1) Water Framework Directive (WFD) via SedNet's membership of the WFD CIS SCG and CIS WG ECOSTAT 2) Zero Pollution Action Plan via SedNet's membership of the Zero Pollution Stakeholder Panel (ZPSP) 3) Soil Health Law via SedNet's membership of the enlarged Soil Expert Group (eSEG)
Communication Activities: WFD CIS sediment guidance document (2022): several SedNet steer group members contributed to the document and Jos Brils was editor and lead author of the sediment contamination chapter in the document Scientific, peer-reviewed paper: Brils J (2020) Including sediment in European River Basin Management Plans: twenty years of work by SedNet, Journal of Soils and Sediments https://doi.org/10.1007/s11368-020-02782-1 20:4229–4237 At 18 October 2019 SedNet became official member of the WFD & FD CIS SCG and SedNet actively engages in the WFD CIS WG Ecological Status (ECOSTAT) as core group member helping to develop WFD sediment management guidance under the 2019-2021 WFD CIS Work Programme Workshops: - At 1 and 2 April 2019 in Dubrovnik SedNet co-organized a 2-day sediment management workshop for and with the WFD CIS Working Group ECOSTAT (Ecological Status). There were 45 participants from 16 European states and from Turkey. The workshop was very successful: it was agreed upon to start to develop a sediment management guidance document aimed to support achieving WFD Good Ecological Status (GES) or Good Ecological Potential (GEP). ECOSTAT will lead, and SedNet and national experts will be asked to help to develop this guidance document. So now for the first time since the launch of the WFD in the year 2000 there will be the needed attention for sediment, as SedNet has been asking continuous attention for since the network started in the year 2002. Position papers / policy briefs: - Moving Sediment Management Forward - The four SedNet key messages (2014) http://sednet.org/publications/moving-sediment-management-forward/ - Effective river basin management needs to include sediment (2017) http://sednet.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/SedNet_policy_brief.pdf Round Table discussions: Three round Table Discussions organized (2006, 2009 and 2016) on the state-of-inclusion of sediment in River Basin Managment planning. Discussions a.o. organized with River Basin Management Commissions representatives. http://sednet.org/work/report-on-the-sednet-round-table-discussion/ and http://sednet.org/work/report-on-the-sednet-round-tablediscussion-2009/ Bi-annual conferences: Since its origin in 2002 SedNet bi-annually organizes international SedNet conferences where the latest scientific insights in sediment management issues are shared with policy makers, water managers, port authorities etc. Thus SedNet in practice bridges for sediment the gap between science and policy making / management practice. http://sednet.org/ and then go to 'events' E-newsletters: Prepared 3 to 4 times a year and disseminated to sediment professionals (including policy makers) with global outreach http://sednet.org/news/newsletter/ Training course: A practical training course on sustainable sediment management organized in 2012 for the Sava in cooperation with a.o.the International Sava River Basin Commission and the four main Sava countries. http://sednet.org/library/ go to 2012, October 15-18 These and more documents as outcome of these activities are also publicly available at: http://sednet.org/library/
