Mission & Interests
Goals: With active individual members in as many as 88 countries and 44 National Society/Association Members who represent over 78,000 European psychiatrists, the European Psychiatric Association (EPA) is the main association representing psychiatry in Europe.
The purpose of the EPA is to improve the quality of mental health care throughout Europe. The Association’s activities address the interests of psychiatrists in academia, research and practice throughout all stages of career development.

Activities
Main EU Legislative Proposals: The EPA regularly follows the policy developments in the health field, namely in the area of mental health and wellbeing. The EPA carries out advocacy activities needed at EU/ national levels and coordinates and takes part in these activities, in collaboration with WHO-Europe, the OECD, other NGOs and third-party organisations. The EPA participates in activities of the European Commission (DG Sante – R&I - Empl – EAC), as needed, and follows closely the legislative work of the European Parliament (ENVI – EMPL – ITRE – LIBE Committees) in health and research related topics. The EPA is represented in high-level consultations and expert working groups on Mental Health and Well-being in the EU, such as the EU Parliament MEP Alliance for Mental Health, the European Medicines Agency Healthcare Professionals’ Working Party and the EU Health Policy Platform.
Communication Activities: The EPA organises the annual European Congresses of Psychiatry, as well as the Policy Forum that precedes the Congress.
- The latest EPA Congress took place in Paris from 25 to 28 March 2023. The next European Congress of Psychiatry will be held in Budapest from 6 to 9 April 2024.
- The Policy Forum precedes the EPA Congress and gathers Individual EPA members, representatives of the EPA Council of National Psychiatric Association (NPA) members and Congress participants, along with other European and international organisations, stakeholders and policy makers, to present and discuss matters of European importance and relevance in the fields of Mental Health and Mental Health Care. The latest Policy Forum took place on 25 March and was entitled “Mental Health in the context of challenging ecosystems”.
The EPA took part in both EU-funded projects and self-funded projects:
- EPA participated as communication and dissemination partner of the Erasmus+ ¨project “European Alliance for Sport and Mental Health – EASMH). The project ended in December 2023.
- EPA participates as a communication and dissemination partner of the COMET project (funded under the Programme “European Social Fund+ Social Prerogatives and Specific Competencies Lines).
- EPA participates as communication partner in the TRUSTING project (Horizon Europe).
- EPA participates as a partner in the "Virtual Brain Twin" project (Horizon Europe).
- EPA participates as a partner in the "PsyPal" project (Horizon Europe).
The EPA collaborates with other associations at EU-level and adopts the following communication/policy implementation tools:
- Partnerships: The EPA has strengthened strategic partnership with other associations working in the field of health and mental health care at EU-level, with the aim of improving communication and exchanges of good practices and work towards common objectives. In addition to contributing to the work of the European Pain Forum, strategic partnerships were developed with the European Academy of Neurology (EAN), GAMIAN-Europe, EUFAMI, the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS), the European Federation of National Psychologists Associations (EFPA) and the European Institute of Women’s Health (EIWH).
- Publications: The EPA experts publish relevant articles in journals (including the European Psychiatry Journal), books, papers and other material.
- Policy statements: The EPA, together with its NPAs and Committees, delivers policy statements at all levels.
- Campaigns: Among its activities, the EPA carries out communication activities to raise awareness on mental health care. In December 2023, the EPA launched its Manifesto, outlining the priorities identified for the EU Elections 2024. The EPA Manifesto is being promoted on the main EPA communication channels.

The implementation of the annual European Congress of Psychiatry, which is the main source of revenue, is ensured by a professional Congress Organiser. Only the surplus (difference between income and expenditure) accrues to the EPA.
